Your system seems silly. Bama was clearly one of the 4 best teams in 2017, like UGA was in 2021 or UT was in 1998.

Undefeated P5 conference champs
1 loss P5 conference champs
Undefeated P5 independent (ND)
2 loss P5 conference champs
1 loss division winners that lost their conference championship
Undefeated G5 conference champs
1 loss P5 that didn’t win their division

Start at the top and keep dropping a line until you get 4 teams. Reward teams that earn the spot on paper instead of giving teams a spot because it feels right. Earn it like a reward instead of being given a shot like a gift.

And when OU and Texas leave the big 12ish they are a G5 conference.

All this shows you know that not all conferences are equal.

The goal is the 4 best teams. It seems pretty obvious to me that could easily include two teams from the same conference.

It should be obvious that Michigan, despite winning the big 10 wasn’t as good as UGA..and they had the same record.
