Black Division I college athletes allege their civil rights are being violated because their compensation is being capped. That's what a group of athletes states in a complaint filed Tuesday by the National College Players Association.

In the complaint to the U.S. Department of Education, the NCPA alleges "the industry-wide NCAA compensation limit causes a disparate impact on Black college students" among the 350 Division I schools.

NCAA demographics show that 20% of all Division I athletes are Black. Approximately 56% are white.

"The Office of Civil Rights that's supposed to investigate, they have the authority to investigate and remedy [the disparity]," said NCPA executive director Ramogi Huma. "There are federal agencies that have the power to act to get us to our goals."

The complaint is similar to lawsuits filed over the years challenging the NCAA on antitrust grounds. The association was found in violation of federal antitrust laws in two high-profile cases -- O'Bannon v. NCAA in 2014 and Alston v. NCAA in 2021.

Last month, the NCPA filed an unfair labor practice charge against the NCAA, Pac-12, UCLA and USC supporting an initiative that players get employee status.

The NCPA is a non-profit athlete advocacy group based in California.

Are they the only ones being capped?

I just had a tuna fish sandwich for lunch. It was very tasty. Most baseball games will be canceled today. Hope everyone is safe today.

Opinions on the subject matter aside, this along with the coming lawsuits on compensation (such as that regarding unionization, for example) is yet another crack in the foundation of the traditional college sports model.

The O'Bannon case has opened Pandora's box on this type of legislation.

ETA: In other words, college sports is about to change, significantly. NIL was the tip of the iceberg.

I want to start a lawsuit. I didn't get a single scholarship because I can't run fast. I feel like slow people need to join together and fight the power!!! This oppression of the speed deprived is an injustice that should stand no longer.

Said it before- NCAA should have settled that lawsuit years ago. Whoever advised them on it is an idiot. There was no way in hell the USSC was going by let the NCAA and Universities collectively take in billions off of players NIL without the players having a right to some of it.

Interesting since they get a disproportionate number of D1 scholarships.

Only interested in equity when it suits them.

White people need to get nice and comfortable with calling this type of bullshite out, and shutting it down.

We need to get comfortable with being called racists, because they wield that word like a weapon against us, and it's really all they have.

Just another validation that I made the right decision in dropping my five Tiger Stadium seats that I have held for 45 years and dropping my five Tiger Stadium Club Seats that I have held for eight years, along with the TAF fees, RV and car parking passes that I have held for thirty years.

I'm just like SCGamecock.....I'm just tired of this shite

Added a quote to the OP about the related unfair labor practice charge that players get employee status.

I'm curious to know what our legal experts like lsufball19 think the ramifications of that are.

For example, would this mean universities would have to provide benefits? I can't see how this would be fiscally possible/feasible.

This is just a part of the real problem here, and that is that whites are allowed to participate in collegiate sports at all…shame on coaches for awarding scholarships to white athletes, scholarships that should really go to “people of color”…
