And you think Kim English is the answer? Wasn’t aware of personal connections, those tend to go well.
No I don’t think Kim is the answer. I think he needs to prove himself for a few years first. But if I had to choose between Gates and English- I am choosing English.
The point here is that we shouldn’t be allowing someone to hire their friend’s husband. Especially when we have paid a search firm to look for quality coaches. It’s no offense to Gates, I am sure he is a nice person, but I am also sure there are better quality and proven coaches out there that an SEC program can and will attract.
I know several of you have taken the time to email the BOC. So if any of you have not taken the time to do so, email them. Even if these clowns decide to hire Gates, I know I at least acted.

The hire sucked, but at this point it is the hire.
Just time to hope for the best

Has the BOC officially voted to approve the contract? If not, it isn’t over.

Optimistic you say?
No you are the problem the real problem where everything this shitty athletic department does is farting out rainbows. Now different than the tard fans on tardtalk in the Stl PSD forum.
I am not old enough to have given a shite about Mizzou back in Norms glory years. I do remember Quinn taking us to an elite 8, and outside of Gilbert having his worst shooting night ever we would have been in the final four finally.
I remember suitcase taking us to the elite 8.
I remember Haith inheriting a team that lost Bowers and he found a way to honestly make that team a real final 4 caliber team by playing small. Didnt work out so well at the end of that season.
But now our athletic department has TANKED our program. Do you know how fricking far one has to fall for people to wish Frank fricking Haith was still our coach?
Sell me whats so great or so "half full" about hiring a guy from Cleveland State. Here is the only hint you need, you cant and like I said earlier ask a high major recruit who Cleveland State is and they ask.....who?
He has two years to prove he can assemble a roster. Not three four or five, just two. not fair to him? I agree but this has been a dumpster fire program for 12 years and three more years of it doesnt make it not a dumpster fire. He took the job, he knows its a dumpster fire but its a raise for him from his friend. The ultimate blame falls on the entire athletic department past and present.
This is basketball you dont get four or five years to "build" it like Clownzo got. He again gets two years, three total but two years to build and by year three its results or bust. And I know but...but if players transfer out how is that his fault. Its entirely his fault like it was entirely Clownzos fault. He's the captain of the ship hes the first to go down with it not the last.

Was in a room with some casual (at best) MU Bball fans earlier today. I brought up the idea of English being HC and the room lit up.
Let that sink in. Mizzou hoops lit up the room. Rare occurrence as of late.
Simply put - Kim is one of us. I would go to Mizzou arena next year to support a team that he leads - I know I’m not alone. That is reason enough.

Also, I think Kim would recruit shooters who could shoot the basketball into the hole thingie. That would be a cool feature to have in our program.

Amen man.
This whole thing stinks of an Admin that has no clue whatsoever at this point.

Please tell me you're not this freaking stupid.
If you actually believe that our AD, in her new job, hired someone who we all KNOW will fail because he's married to her friend, then you're dumb enough to be a kansas fan.

I just don't get it. No one likes to watch this style of basketball. No one any good wants to play this style of basketball. Certainly no one who wants to go to the NBA wants to play this style of basketball. It's one of the reasons our arena is empty, and it will be one of the reasons our arena will stay empty.
Kim would be better. The Texas State coach would be better, the Drake coach would be better. Bet none of them were contacted. The speed of this hire suggests Gates was the primary target from day one. WHY?
This will not end well.

I guess agree to disagree. I personally think there are probably dozens of high school coaches, jc coaches, mid-major coaches, who if a P5 HC position were given to them, could do well. (where well = entertaining bb, over .500 and making the tournament over 40% of the time; plus seeing progress.)
How many position coaches are aching to get a coordinator gig for football, knowing it is almost impossible to catapult to HC without first serving as an OC/DC? Pittman is a rare exclusion, and he was an OL coach for 25+ years.
It isn't even about the coach as much anymore. Just don't mess up and drive off players. The NIL money will recruit better than coaches can.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure we don't have any because nobody gives a frick about Mizzou basketball anymore. I don't see any companies shelling out NIL deals for the bullshite product we've been treated with.

I don’t think that’s what people think. I think most people think that our AD think Gates is a good hire.
He could be successful. The odds of that are low, some because all coaching jobs are a bit of a dice roll, some of it because Missouri has some structural issues with its basketball program, some of it because our program sucks, some of it because his resume is thin.
But I believe she believes it’s a home run hire. This is all assuming he’s the hire.

You would have plenty of talented coaches sign up for an $800k job. Absolutely. You won’t have anyone who has proven themselves at a high level. And that’s the whole point of our search. Or it should have been. High-level success.

Snelling is becoming absolutely orgasmic over the hire.
That's bad. That's really bad.

Sounds like we agree. My point was that he doesn't fit what we should have been able to get, and I don't see the point of paying over what his resume suggests. Wasn't trying to say "let's hire a hs coach."
Example: I had to have my wife and I declared conservators of our biological children's life insurance money they received when my grandfather passed away. Called around St. Louis, got quotes indicating $1200-2500 plus.
Called a lawyer in our county seat, office across from the courthouse: $600, possibly up to 900. He got it all done for $600. Should I have paid him $1200 because that was the cheapest quote I got besides his?
He got the job done; state and insurance company were satisfied.

I get what you’re saying. And we agree. But no agent is going to let their client coach go to an SEC school for $800k. Not with an Athletic budget of $106M.

Missouri is a flagship, land grant institution, located in a state with a population of almost 7 million competing in arguably the best athletic conference in the country. It has a top-tier arena and facilities for basketball.
Gates may do very well, and I'll happily eat crow if he does, but with what Missouri brings to the table y'all should be looking at a coach from a smaller school who has been doing a great job as HC, not a pretty good job.
If you are asking a HC (even if he has been an assistant at big time programs) to jump from the Horizon League to the SEC you want someone who has been absolutely dominant for a little while in that sort of conference.

I am extremely deflated over this hiring. This is a top 50 job in men's bb, and we are not hiring a top 100 caliber of candidate.
