I think you’re correct in terms of its initial intent (but it has also held Olympic events and concerts - notably the Allman Bros - over the years.
It’s a fine on-campus venue for WBB and Gymnastics and other non-sporting events that require ample indoor seating. But for what Mens basketball has become nationally, they could build a 9-10k seater as a part of the Classic Center downtown and pack the thing out consistently with its proximity to bars before and after games, alone

I lived in downtown Athens for a few months for work in 2020/2021 and an arena in downtown would be really cool. I love how all the bars are right there in one area. I don't know where there is enough space in downtown though for an arena and parking?

It has quite a history. I saw Olympic volleyball there. It's still a right of passage at UGA to climb to the top, although getting around those metal guards is tricky. I had to look it up because I thought someone rode their motorcycle over it. Wikipedia says it was Jake Scott!! I also heard claims that someone flew a plane beneath the roof during construction.
Oh, and the concerts. While in school I saw the Village People, Marshall Tucker, Boston, Heart, and Jimmy Buffet at the Coliseum (it wasn't Stegman back then).
