Why is it some of the best SEC coaches of all time (Meyer, Saban, Spurrier) weren’t good enough to succeed at the highest level of football? Is it because they needed a huge talent advantage over their opponents? Not enough work ethic? Couldn’t boss around men like they can kids?

Saban was fine in the NFL. Maybe below average but not bad.

NFL is just different, you have to come through the nfl ranks in 99% of cases or have something that is revolutionary like the west coast offense or air raid. Otherwise teams will quickly catch up to you.

Same can be said the other way, veen a few successful nfl guys coach collegw but short of Pete Carroll it is rare.

I'd guess that how you tell 18-22 year olds with very little money in their pockets what to do is a little different than how you tell 23-30 year old multi-millionaires with more money than you what to do.

As I've always heard said - college players play for the coach. Pro coaches coach for the players.

Saban has been very frank on the topic. He claims it dawned on him how much the NFL had changed since his time with the Browns in the 90s with the impact of free agency, infiltration and effect of media, and the inability to control his own destiny and establish a program due to a variety of factors.

Still, he took a really bad team and went 9-7 the first year. Had he stayed beyond the 6 win set back year in year 2 or returned later, he may very well have been able to gain more control and set more of the culture he likes within the program. NfL HCs now are getting a lot more control of football operations, which is the point that frustrated him the most.

Yet, the majority of fans here in Miami still feel jilted.

For starters, you're required to cook the meal without being allowed to buy the groceries.

And anyone who has been following NFL football for longer than 6 weeks understand that.

Now, that having been said, Spurrier and Meyer's failure was more because of personality issues, not football coaching issues. Meyer's specifically were because of how he treated people. Saban...we'll never know how successful he ultimately would have been, but it would have been foolish to bet against him.

Other college coaches have been hugely successful...Switzer, Johnson, Carroll. "SEC" isn't relevant to the discussion.

Or do you think Switzer, Johnson, and Carroll wouldn't have been successful in the SEC?

Lovie Smith coached in two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl...and he was a fricking joke as a college coach. How do you explain that?

They were 4-12 the year before.

I had heard that there were people as fricking stupid as you on this board, but I hadn't yet seen them in action firsthand. So thanks for that, I guess.

I'm pretty sure Jason Taylor wouldn't have allowed that. Taylor is on record as saying Saban transformed his career at Miami and likely wouldn't have become an NFL Hall of Famer if not for Saban.

Some people don't like being told the truth. Thomas seemed to be one of them.

Culpepper was the one who had to be physically restrained from Saban.

Again, more control to keep those egos in check is required to ensure good order and discipline.

I'm sure Saban learned a great deal from the failed experience, as well. And, I couldn't be happier that it all blew up I'm MIA for him

Switzer

Troy, Emmitt, and Michael won the 1995 Super Bowl DESPITE Switzer, not because of Switzer. That was still Jimmy's team.

The dolphins were a basket case and CNS brought them respectability.. problem was too many chiefs and not enough Indians..... we don't want D. Brees. We like the Cunningham ham kid! I want D. Brees, he's damaged goods. He passed his physical. Barely! Well, regardless we want to go with Cunningham as our franchise qb..

CNS..........................................................I'm not going to be the coach at Bama!....................................................M.Moore..." you'll call all the shots and have complete autonomy!"...............................................Jimmy Sexton.."well coach, they're willing to pay what you're making here with incentives that can really drive up your earnings!"................................................"I want to thank y'all for being so kind to me and Mrs. Terry and all the Sabans. We look forward to building the kind of program here that most of you are used to being around.. I want to thank M. Moore for graciously waiting on me to make a decision to come to Alabama!"........... the rest is history!

Cunningham was nearly 50 at the time. But, that would have been a surprise move

This is such a lame excuse.. Switzer could have lost with that team just as he won with it.

Had Drew Brees come to MIA, Saban may still be in the NFL as the HC or possibly now the GM at MIA.

Switzer's first year they lost in the AFC Championship. His second year they won the Super Bowl. So even though Johnson won the SB his last year, the Cowboys still improved from year 1 to year 2 under Switzer.
