I can't think of any other big jobs that were open at the time so Saban probably stays in the NFL for at least another year.

Had Rich Rod said yes, Saban likely would have stayed with Miami another year, then signed as HC of Michigan in 08. And college football would look radically different.

Or the more likely scenario...Michigan gets their Michigan man, Herbie leaks it, alternate universe Joe Alleva lets Lester go, Saban comes home, tRant never blows up with all the stylized
As replaced with prideful p&g, O eventually replaces "it was the painkillers" Sark, Texas 8&4 remains unchanged, and finally Saban brings multiple trophies home until the inevitable rebuilding year in which tDroppings and local ESPN push for a change bringing on the next one of us hires. The inevitable Saban to Bama happens and the Earth resumes its rotation.

And maybe Saban would not have been so harsh with that Miami linebacker at practice

Making him cry and everything

Nah. Michigan would have gone after Les "Michigan Man" Miles. LSU would have let him walk without a fight a Saban returns to Baton Rouge.

Unless one believes in predestination,
I have to reach back further for another unsung
hero and the role he played in having Saban come to Alabama. If Mike Price had not been such a
total dumb arse and got himself fired before coaching
a game, he might have lingered on for several
years, it would have broken the chain of
events as they would play out. So, thank
you Mike and "Destiny" for helping make it all happen.
