The Next Austin? How About Arkansas. Seriously.
quote:

For the past decade, coastal metros like New York and San Francisco dominated the landscape for the upwardly mobile, but the main story became how to cope with the high cost of living in those cities. One solution was to move into lower-cost neighborhoods, further pushing up rents and home prices. Others moved to lower-cost metros that shared some of the characteristics of those high-cost places; Austin, Texas, was one of the biggest beneficiaries of that trend.

Thanks to the accumulated impact of all that migration — accelerated by lifestyle changes during the pandemic — Austin is no longer affordable, and arguably overpriced for what it offers. That begs the question: Where should someone who’s been priced out of Austin look? I would argue the best candidate to be the next Austin is the up-and-coming region known as Northwest Arkansas.

quote:

The underlying driver in all this is that a lot of second-tier metro areas got a lot more expensive over the past two years and aren't the bargains they used to be. New places will gain traction as metros like Austin and Boise struggle with their own affordability problems. At the same time, the continued growth in Texas will slowly but surely create its own spillover dynamics to other metro areas, just as growth on the West Coast spilled over to Austin.

Northwest Arkansas might not be on the radar of many coastal people. but it's the most likely candidate to be the prime beneficiary of these trends.

N. Central Ark is a better place to move if you want what once made NWA great. Once the cultural locusts move in it becomes a shithole. Wealth doesn't make a place better. Usually makes it worse.

I think Arksulli got transitioned here this way. Very dark times indeed. If we got rid of all of the coffee shops in Fayetteville that may cause them to move back….

God let's hope not

Aside from that sentiment, that is a lot of ignorant shite in this thread. There are lots of towns and places to live in NWA, I'd hate to judge it from A Street in Bentonville or the folks walking out of Top Golf, because that is not really a big part of the region

Ya'll are some whiney jealous bitches.

You don't like NWA, then don't live/move there. Simple and whine free.

Anyway, I agree with the article in the OP that we are one of the cities which will become what Austin is.

In a lot of ways, we already are what Austin was in the late 1980s. Metro population approaching 600k. Lots of outdoor activities that are accessible (for now). A big state school in the south end of the metro. Big corporations in the north end of the metro. Increasingly blue dot in an overwhelmingly red state.

We have the same types of lakes and floating rivers here that they have in the Texas Hill Country. The Ozarks overall are better and more scenic, yet very similar. The mountain biking here, at least from a technical standpoint, is as good as it is anywhere in the country.
