Basketball in March for sure. We've survived bad seasons in football before. Making the tournament this year sets us up for a long time if Bruce is serious about making AU his home

Yea, that was a fun tournament. If I remember correctly, we had a lot of wins where we were trailing within the last 2-3 minutes and had some pretty sweet comebacks.

Auburn vs. Syracuse 2003

2003 was the year that we lost to Carmelo Anthony and the eventual National Champs by 1 point. Yeah we hit a 3 at the buzzer to make it a 1 point game, but only because Syracuse hit all of their free throws down the stretch. That team was fun to watch and never quit. Cliff Ellis was a damn good coach.

I was in 8th grade that year and vividly remember that tournament. My dad took me out of school early to watch our first round game which was another close win. We also beat Wake Forest and Joeh Howard that tourney too. Man I miss Auburn having a good basketball team.

Oh and I would take 9 wins in a heart beat.

9 regular season wins because that means we beat Clemson, LSU, UGA or Bama and the melt by those fan bases would be glorious.

Regardless of record, a Bruce BB team will always have a chance and be fun to watch.

Cliff Ellis was a good coach.

Damn good? Naw.

Good? Yes.

He'd feast on tiny directional schools prior to the SEC season and go .500 or worse in the SEC every year.

Here's his conference records by year:

7-9
6-10
6-10
7-9
14-2 (the lone year I ever bought basketball season tickets )
9-7
7-9
4-12
5-11
6-10

Total: 56-90 (.384)

Cliff Ellis was a *good* coach considering how historically bad Auburn's basketball program was and is.

He don't rate any higher than that.

It depends on what football would finish with in the 2 situations.

As long as we had a winning record (even like last season) I would MUCH rather see the basketball team make it in the NCAA Tournament as a 6-12 seed. We need to get basketball turned around and after this #1 recruiting class, we need to win.

If it ment the football team finishing .500 or below, to hell with basketball. Football is the money maker for the university.

Tourney...hate to go full on nega here, but I wouldn't mind the football team doing bad enough that Gus gets fired as long as we can get Tom Herman from Houston to replace him.

I truly think Gus will be safe this season regardless. I think if we have a bad season, he will have an out by letting CRL go and bringing in Kendall Briles. Which would help bring in JS. I've seen reports this is in the works, regardless of the outcome of the season. Same person said CRL is now open to smaller schools. This is a credible source. He called CDC leaving right after signing day, a month or two before signing day... So I tend to believe him... TIFWIW

However if that were to happen, odds are its another Auburn v Texas A&M battle for Herman.

Auburn historically hires the big name guys like Herman when it has a coaching vacancy.
History is a beautiful predictor of our future...maybe we should spend less time wishing for something that isn't going to happen and more time hoping Gus straightens things out. In the end that would be what is best for Auburn.

If we're going head to head with a&m on Herman, we're gonna lose.

Regardless, I'm good with letting it play out over the next two years.

I would rather both be good at the same time. That would make for a good all-around season in Auburn athletics.
