Maybe 5 or 6 on the ranking.
What impresses me about Tre is he seems to have all the tools. When he needs to be quick, he's quick. When he needs to be powerful, he's powerful. When he needs balance, he keeps his feet under him.
He's not the best at any one thing, but he always seems to know when to cut, when to lower his shoulder, etc.
Can't find the gif, but there's a great one of him where he accelerates running east west to get to the corner, makes a hard cut to beat 1 man and gain positive yards then puts his shoulder down and makes a safety pay while gaining another 2-3 yards. It's not even a first down or anything but it just so defines him as a running back.

If you look at it from a pure collegiate production standpoint and no NFL bias then he's a top 5 back no doubt about it.

I think he's #2. He hasn't gotten the hype as some of the others. However, he can do it all. What he lacks in pure break away speed, he makes up in short yardage production. I think he has better vision than just about all of them. Its not a clear #2 but I think he's earned it.
Davis, Ronnie, Carnell - right up there. My favorite was always Brooks (Chargers). However, Mason is practically unstoppable against our toughest competition.

We'll see if he returns next year...
ETA: Still Pissed he wasn't a finalist for the Doak Walker Award. I think they were a bit too soon in cutting off when they select finalists for that (before the SECCG). Otherwise Andre Williams might've had some competition.

He is an All-American (Sporting News) and will finsish second in the Heisman. Not Bo, but as good as any other and yes that includes Caddie and Ronnie...
One name not on anyones list is William Andrews, had a great pro career also...

Fringe top 3 best season by an Auburn running back, fringe top 10 Auburn running back for his career. As others have mentioned, if he chooses to come back for another season, he moves way up.

Watching caddy in person was something special. I would have to put him over Tre on just natural abilities alone.

Hard to compare due to his high usage rate and style of offense. What kind of numbers do Ronnie and Cadilac put up if they are the lone workhorse ? Same time you got to give credit for his high volume and cobsistency
Like Jones said another good year and he is set in stone. Otherwise he is in the discussion but on the outside looking in IMO

Would have loved to have seen that showcase
Another interesting thought too...how much better, if any, would Tre's #s be if he had a defense like those guys had?
Tre's numbers would actually be way worse, in my mind, if he had a defense like the classic Auburn defenses have been.
Many games he would have not been on the field in the third and fourth quarters at all, with a classic Auburn defense, he would have been sitting on the sidelines cheering on Grant, Payne, Ford, Shakespeare, and whoever else would get reps, similar to the Western Carolina game.

Didn't really get into AU football until the early 2000s. So my opinion is based on the past decade or so.
I'd put Tre behind Ronnie & KI. Caddy at 4th. Loved the way he ran, but when you're talking about an overall back, injuries have to play a part.
Kenny Irons was probably my favorite runner out of all those. He was just nasty. Ran with a vengeance. I'll never forget the clinic he put on LSU in '05.

Agreed, Kenny was one of the most hard nosed backs we've had. Bostic back in 93 was similar as well. Not the most talented, but they had that attitude factor. Mason has a good bit of the same.

Carnell Cadillac Williams is my personal favorite, but tre is making a run for it with this season.

I can add some historical perspective, as I was privileged to see guys like Cribbs, Brooks, Lionel James, William Andrews, and even Terry Henley and Sedrick McIntyre in person back in the day.
Tre has become one of my top 5 because he doesn't possess the raw physical abilities we tend to associate with the alltime great AU RBs. He doesn't have the strength of a Rudi, the pure speed of a Fullwood, the elusive quickness of a Caddy, or the unearthly combination of the three like Bo - and yet he gets the job done. He earns every yard, and to me that makes him all the more special.
Tre Mason does work, hard work. You can't get any more Auburn than that.
