If this is the hire, and until I see his plane touch down in tuscaloosa I won’t fully believe it (he is a sexton client after all), the lack of fanfare compared to saban’s hire is stunning. Of course that was going to be the case whoever they hired, and will remain the case the further down their list they have to go.

But yeah, in terms of fanfare, from 1-10 with 1 being “we want a leader not a loser” and 10 being “we bawlin baby” this feels like a 5 at best.

I think it’s a pretty good hire

They had to hire him cause everyone else, Lannjng, Kiffen, Dabo et al turned them down they are not dumb enough to follow Saban. Deboer jumped at the major move up and money. He has no fricking clue that he just jumped into a shark tank. 3 loses next year which is probably the ceiling based on their schedule and he will be on the hot seat.

Spot on! I would like to be a fly on the wall at his house when he finally understands just what he has gotten himself into. I bet that’ll be an interesting conversation.

They may like football out in Washington. They may even be passionate about it. But, they’re not “shoot your friend because she didn’t take the loss serious enough” passionate.

They don’t take football seriously at all in the PNW. Football is a 3-4 month sport. Oddly enough, the college towns I visited in the PNW, are as rabid about track and field as we are about football in the South. Track is a year long sport up there.

I just think he’s an elite X’s and O’s guy and roster management guy. The gamble is hoping he can assemble a staff that recruits well and that to some degree will Alabama football recruit itself? That I’m not as sure on. Also the idea of Saban still having an office and casting a shadow over the program is insane

The speed in which this hire happened does not allow me to believe this. We saw it in our own coaching search every dick, Joe, and Harry turned us down.

He hired Sexton a month ago and I think he was one of their top choices to begin with. I think this was in negotiations a while ago. He’s not a bad transitional hire and could end up being a great hire just as he could end up being a bad hire. Time will tell. However, this was a pretty good move by Byrne. Even if it was the only move he had if your assertion is accurate.

They were turning down by Lanning, Sark, and Norvell 100%.

Ok, but nothing is ever 100% in this business of college football. Because some coaches tweet they are staying where they are.

I don’t really know how many hires on paper could have been better than this. Lanning, yes, Norvell, maybe, but not sure on any of the others

Only when it’s an Auburn search, right? For all we know, Haskins was our former idiot AD’s #1 choice. There’s a reason why the AD is gone.

I don't doubt that Gregg Byrne was in a hot tub with another guy but not sure that the other guy was DeBoer.
