I'd be good with Strong.

I would like him. Dude can recruit. He seems to be able to scout. Has a strong commmitment to D and runs a pro-style O. I think he could do wonders at a program like ours. He probably would not come here. But he seems ready to make the leap to the big boys. If we do not get him, someone else will.

I was thinking about Kyle Shanahan the other day. I could dig it. Please everyone tell me why this is a horrible idea

I think he would come here. That's a big arse job for him. Big chance to prove he's a good coach on a national scene.

Wasn't Auburn trying to get their QB Bridgewater? Did the coaches take someone else, or did they lose him to Strong?

I'd be fine with Charlie. Think he'd do a fine job at AU.

Strong would be a decent hire, but I think we need to get either Patterson or Petrino (maybe Fisher), if we are serious about winning.

I think Strong would be a good hire, but at this point would only happen if we fail to hire one of the bigger names already mentioned.

That is not to say I think the others are better, just bigger names with more experience. I think Strong may be a great coach in the future

No he didn't. No one who walks into a team recruited by Butch Davis is walking into a dumpster fire. Davis led them to two straight bowl games for the first time since 97/98 under Mack Brown. Hell, even after the NCAA came down, they still finished 16th in both Scouts & Rivals.

Sorry, but a lot more goes into my dumpster fire comment than just recruiting rankings. Whoever takes over for us next year will be walking into a dumpster fire as well, despite us having a bunch of talent.

Kragthorpe was a terrible coach at Louisville, but he didn't leave them with nothing talentwise, as evidenced by the all conference players you mentioned, he had a similar mixture of 3 stars with 4 stars mixed in that Strong had there his first two recruiting classes (though Strong's class last year was very solid).

quote:

Good luck with that. USM gave up 40 or more points 9 times in his first 3 years. Auburn has given up 40 or more points 9 times since Chizik's arrival in Auburn. Let that sink in a moment (so only 7 times his first 3 years).

Let's get real here, we are talking about Southern Miss. They have the same sort of recruiting ability as UAB/Troy for the most part, being the #3 team in a state with very little talent. They are going to give up 40+ points 3 times a year when they play teams from major conferences more often than not, the only exception being when they get lucky and get a DC like Nix.

But anyway, that really is besides the point, Fedora is an offensive coach, his defenses are going to be decided by the talent he recruits and the quality of the DC he hires. On the offensive side he's been stellar, coaching a bunch of 2 stars talent at USM into top 20 offenses for multiple years, and doing the same at UNC, with great run/pass balance. I only mentioned the defensive numbers at UNC to show he had an average defense at least there, and mainly to show a worrisome trend with Strong.

Strong is supposed to be a defensive guru, and quite frankly his defense this year is putting up pretty average numbers playing against pretty subpar teams. His defensive numbers have gotten slightly worse every year he's been there, which is a worrisome trend for a defensive guy when we need someone to coach up the talent as a head coach. Strong's defense hasn't passed the eye test for me this year, and they aren't really passing the stat test in a weak arse conference either. Every decent offense they've played has put up 30+ points on them, which is not what I want to see from a potential head coach with a defensive background.

Like I said, Fedora would be down the list a bit for me, but I think he would be decent. I think Strong is overrated as hell based on being undefeated in a weak Big East conference.

No we wanted Frazier over Bridgewater.

No, I believe he was a solid commit to Florida State but commited to LSU when FSU had coaching shake ups. He decommitted from LSU when they went after Mettenberger.

And people are riding Fedora's nuts because of one good year in Conference USA in which he lost to both Marshall & UAB (one of three wins for the mighty blazers that year) while only beating 1 ranked team.

And let's face it, there are only 2 good teams in the ACC. And lucky for Larry, he doesn't have to play either one. His next 3 opponents are a combined 9-15.

Who's riding his nuts? I said he's a good offensive mind that could be a decent head coach for us combined with a good DC.

On a side note, not sure who's rankings you are using, not that it really matters as to what I'm saying in any way, but the scout rankings I looked at for 2008-2011 had USM with one 5 star player in Brown and not a single 4 star player during that period. So some major differences between what I was looking at and you were, but anyway.

Stats are kinda important to look at, unless you somehow think that Chizik>Saban just because he went undefeated in 2010 ya know? Just because Strong has been lucky enough to pull out close wins at the end of games versus Cincy and USF doesn't mean he's a superstar. He's still the same guy who went 7-6 in 2010 and 2011.

I hope we don't hire Fedora or Strong, we'll have struck out big time if we have to go for them in my opinion.
