Bad news on the Garrison Brooks front. Apparently UGA has made some serious inroads with him and is now considered to be his leader (assuming UNC doesn't officially offer). Our next in line would be Ike Obiagu. He is actually higher rated but our staff likes Brooks better of the 2 due to a much much more refined offensive game.

Obiagu's Scout profile

Also MCT, I heard Heron's defense was top of the line and our defense overall is probably the most excited part of this team

Thoughts on that assessment?

I've heard consistency is his only issue defensively which can probably be said for 99% of all freshman.

Overall Pearl is very happy with our perimeter defense but without having a stud down low to test our interior that is still up in the air. The hope is our press and the 30 second shot clock can cover any issues we may have in that area but it's one of those things we are going to have to figure out once the season starts.

Did we press in the scrimmage at all? How's the implementation coming?

I know we aren't tall in the post, but Spencer shows some spring and Laron is lanky as fug. Is it just the fear of being backed down by a 260lb+ post guy?

Yes and on schedule is what I've heard. I live too far away to see them in person but the people I know and trust all say we have a lot of quickness and enough length to be very effective pressing.

Exactly. It's the Tyler Davis and Yante Maten types that we are concerned with. Both Spencer and Smith are very good coming off their man to alter or block shots but we don't have anyone with the beef to match up with those types. Fortunately most teams don't have one but it is still our biggest concern defensively.

He goes to Auburn High so no chance we get him.

Phillip Marshall asked 4 insiders about the chances that Austin Wiley enrolls at AU in January and all 4 insiders said "no comment"

Mark Murphy had been on the not happening train since that rumor surfaced and he has backed off that recently. He is now saying there is a possibility he does but he won't commit to an answer either way.

I can see Davis but Maten isn't that big is he? Has Spencer been able to add any weight?

Maten is around 6'8 245 so he is a bit of a load. Spencer's knee injury kept him from lifting a lot so he didn't add much mass in the off-season. He and Smith both are about the same size at 6'8 220. Purifoy and McLemore for comparison are both around 6'7 230 currently and neither are what you would call a banger.

JGT/BMatt talked about the scrimmage/BBall thoughts in their podcast. JGT always shows an appreciation for BBall given his roots at Kentucky

- Heron is a slasher/excellent defender but has a lot of room for improvement in shooting game. Best off ball defender

-TJ Dunans looks 100%. On drives looks to be pulling up for a shot instead of finishing at the rim more than BP would like

-TJ Lang probably will be 1st/2nd guy off bench, 3PT shot looks smooth and has been consistent, gained weight to 210-220 giving him toughness/better finishing inside

-Danjel Purifoy, can do everything and will likely play stretch 4. Attacks the hole aggressively with power instead of finesse

-LaRon Smith's length + athleticism will let him be a shot blocker but Auburn is missing a large post presence to match up (MCT said same thing)

-Anfernee McElmore is an athletic presence and should be aggressive rebounded while developing offensive game

JGT Starting 5 to begin season
-Ronnie Johnson
-Bryce Brown (Maybe TJ Lang for seniority)
-TJ Dunans
-Danjel Purifoy
-Laron Smith

I think Heron will start at some point, but I like having Brown in that lineup for spacing.

I think it was a start the season lineup and that Heron maybe Harper will sneak in there at some point

In addition to the above notes, they both also said they see Auburn sneaking into the NCAAT barring any major injuries/setbacks

Don't think the starters matter much, tbh. We have 10 guys that can and will play. It's gonna be fun.

Bryce had a really good off-season right? It seemed as though he was a bit too inconsistent last season to garner a starting spot, but if he can hit the routine 3's no problem and locks down on defense, then I don't have a problem with it.

ETA: Can someone please link the podcast if it's free and give the time range of when they talk bball.

Yeah, I think he did have a good offseason. Saw where he had some good games in tournaments in Atlanta. I want to say that he scored 36 one game with good competition.

It is behind a paywall on the site

If you have an iPhone you can grab all their podcasts free by searching "AuburnSports" and it is called the Rundown
