Duke Williams was on a path not long ago to be one of the most talked about wide receivers at the NFL Scouting Combine this week. He will leave Indy in a few days having accomplished just that.

But not in the way he -- and many others -- had hoped.

"I'm a first-round pick no matter what," Williams said Thursday, "but off the field I'm a seventh-round pick. My character is seventh round.

"I hurt my family, my friends, my teammates, my coaches who gave me chance after chance," he said. "I regret the fight. (Coach Gus) Malzahn, he gave me chance after chance. It's not his fault. It's my fault because I should've learned. He took a chance on me. And I hurt the Auburn family by getting dismissed."

Dude was never a first round WR. Possession receives are not taken before round 4

Good for him, if he means it. Looks like a lesson was learned.

I think it is pretty clear that Duke had/has some personal (psychological) issues that he hasn't dealt with yet. It's really unfortunate.

He reminds me a lot of Brandon Marshall in terms of his personality, and BM15 happens to have a personality disorder he has to cope with. As it stands, on the field, at 230 pounds, Duke Williams will be Anquan Bolden, but if he loses 15 pounds he can be Dez Bryant. He's not just a possession WR, IMO. He had game breaker speed when he had his weight down.

You know at the time I said good riddance. Now I really do hope he's found the help he needs to get his mind straight.

He's saying all the right things at the combine.. Let's hope he then practices what he's learned

Meh, he had every opportunity to man up and do the right thing. Surrounded by people like Dameyune who tried to help him. He chose to act like an idiot. Forgive me if I don't think it's unfortunate. I think he's stupid.

He "chose" to act like an idiot is an interesting idea, all things considered.

Just some fodder for thought... perhaps he has a behavioral issue which stems from his particular neurophysiology (shaped by both his genes and past experience). In any meaningful sense, does this really reflect a free "choice'?

I'm in the same boat. Good for the team that he left but I always root for people to figure things out.

The guys who do see the light and recognize their faults, they end up being really good human beings.

This. Or maybe he has a neurological issue that is to blame for all of his issues.

I would not be surprised if he is bipolar. No matter what though I hope he does well. Hearing his name being bellowed out after first down catches never got old.

If you'd like to have a discussion on the topic, I'm open to it. This seems like a slight sent in my direction.

I'm
Betting someone take a chance on him in the 6th or 7th round.

He'll be on a roster to start the season next year at any rate.

I wish Duke Williams nothing but the best. Go on and be great. We all make mistakes in this life.

Not taking jab but didn't he say all the right things after one of the off-field issues and when he got back on the team he fricked all that up again and then broke the jaw of one of his teammates?
