Everyone says he ruined their defense, horrible DC, yada yada. But can he be that bad to keep getting good jobs? I mean hell, Little Nicky hired him like 2 or 3 times. The talent on D is there, CWM had them boys playing well at the end of the year. Are we being setup for huge dissapointment with all the hype of the front 7 this year only to have Steele screw it up?

This is college football, so the answer is yes. His last two hires were desperation scrambles by us and LSU.

Satan demoted him from DC after his first season. Dude might be a top notch LB coach, but there is little evidence he is a good DC.

When exactly? Was it the time we gave up the most rushing yards to a single player in Auburn football history?

Its all conjecture at this point. LSU fans say he is terrible and laugh at Auburn fans for hiring him, so naturally negabarners have latched onto that viewpoint. But to be fair, Steele was a plan D hire, so there was very little excitement when he was hired. Statistically he fields a top 25 defense for the most part, but defenses have gotten worse when he is the DC. Meh hire tbh, but we have so much talent that fielding a top 25 defense will be just fine by our current standards

If you cant admit that our defense was playing great at the end of the season last year, then you are completely lost.

You mean to the guy that won the Heisman and broke 30 yr old records previously held by Herschel f'n Walker? And on 40 something carries. Ok, point taken but you can't say that D didn't improve over the course of the season

Steele shows that he always underachieved and finished with top 25 Defenses when. He should have been too 10

I'm hoping Steele's underachieving is 20-30 this year

I understand he wasnt first choice for us which is a whole different debate on why DC's absolutely wanted nothing to do with the program. I really am just wondering if he's a bad coach. I just want a solid defense we know won't go full retard week in and week out. Just want to be stable on that side again. Defense wins championships as they say

in today's game, holding teams under 20 points should be the goal. If we are in the 20-22 points per game, then i will be satisfied, regardless of where that ranks us nationally. Anything less than that, frick yeah

If we give up 24 points or less, we shouldn't lose with an "offensive coach" at the helm.

Right. There are two ways of looking at his stats as a D coordinator. He's either:

A.) a net negative to whatever team he's the DC for, meaning the ranking of your D necessarily goes down after his hire. That means he would take a 7th ranked D and turn it into a 20th, or a 62nd ranked D and turn it into a 74th. This would suck.

B.) he's a consistently 20-40 D coach, and every job he's had he has regressed to his mean. That means he would take still take a 7th ranked D and turn it into a 20th, but he would take that 62nd ranked D and turn it into a 38th.

I personally think he's B, considering the caliber of coaches and their defenses who hire him, but it's all conjecture by everyone at this point. Regardless, he's apparently really good at teaching fundamentals, and if there was anything the Auburn D has needed more since Chizik came its been defensive fundamentals.

This is your most even handed and objective post to date. You must be sick.

So tired of seeing whiffs and arm tackles. Hoping his teaching of fundamentals is true

Or people that have researched his career.

I told LSU fans he was a bad defensive coordinator when they hired him. Auburn hiring doesn't change by opinion.

ETA: He has talent to work with so I hope he proves me wrong.

Steele will be fine. It will be hard NOT to be fine with the monstrous D-line AU has. I would say there's only 4 or 5 schools (if that) who have the depth and talent AU has at that position.

Besides he was at LSU for one year. If he had been there 3 or 4 years and there was a huge drop-off in performance, then I would be worried. But there's not much you can judge from one season.

The man has coached in the NFL and has been an assistant under some of the best NCAA head coaches. The guy knows football.

My only concern is that he doesn't end up like Ellis Johnson -- a veteran coach who SHOULD know what he's doing, but for some weird reason just doesn't get it done.
