For some reason Auburn doesn't put defensive records for freshmen in the Media Guide but I'm 99% positive Groves 7.5 sacks in 2004 is the record for a freshman at AU.

That being said, how many does Lawson record this year?

Over/Under 4.25 for simplicity sake. Can he break the record?

Over. I would have put the over under at 6 to 7.

Wow I hope you are right, but I hope we just have one guy on the team with those numbers.

Daniels will play better than expected. Not saying he will be better than Carl but his reps will slow down production of some of the other guys./

It depends entirely on how many they rack up on the little guys. One of them could end up with 9-10 if they have a game where they get 2-3 a piece.

Quentin was great, but Carl has more potential.

Teams pass more in the SEC today than they did 9 years ago... I think there will be way more opportunities for Lawson. Also, Groves had a harder time seeing the field b/c of the talent around him... that's not the case this year for Lawson.

If he stays healthy, he'll pass the 7.5 mark.

Everything suggests Lawson is the more talented/developed of the two at this point in his career, but Groves was playing in a D with a lot of playmakers in 2004. Carl doesn't have anyone else (it appears) to disrupt plays, command double teams, or collapse the pocket.

I still think Lawson gets over 4.25. Maybe around 6 sacks this season, but doesn't break the 7.5 mark.

I think a lot of people are underestimating how difficult it is to break the sacks record.

All-time at Auburn the Top 10 sack performances for a season, the #10 spot is 8.5 sacks. Getting to 7.5 with no experienced all-conference linemen beside you I find it very difficult for Lawson to get to that number much less get to 5.

I think a better perspective would have been to state Mr. Superfreak Jedaveon Clowney had 8.5 his freshman season at South Carolina. Even though he is on a different team he is more recent and more tangible because he is fresher in our minds than QG. That would have really shown how difficult it is to get 7+ sacks. Clowney only bested it by 1.

IMO it would be a more accurate comparison if you looked at Jadaveon "Superfreak" Clowney and his 8-1/2 sacks as a FR since it wasn't so long ago. This shows how tough that number is since he only bested QG by 1. Whadda you think E?

Just playin', but I agree with you on this. I think the difference would be that Lawson is stronger and maybe more polished coming out, also he played against far superior competition than JC in HS. 300lb linemen are pretty avg for CL while JC rarely saw anyone that size or of the talent CL has faced.

Most of the 300lb linemen he faced were slow though is the difference. Still prboably better competition than what JC faced.

I expect Lawson in the 5.5-7 sack range. The lack of pass rush from the rest of our line will cause his numbers to suffer
