Brandon King is a 6'2 220lb S who runs a 4.4. Whitehead is a former suspended 5'11 200 LB 4.65

Also I imagine the Belchick can coach up a S better than our recently fired CFB staff

3-4 doesn't really work at the college level. Spread basically killed it.

College LBs aren't athletic enough to be both powerful against the run and quick/agile in coverage not to mention play recognition

Disagree. Vandy stays mostly base 3-4. The way Mason builds it is that the ILBs are more coverage based and OLBs rush or cover flats. At times, it almost works like a 5-2. Our OLBs are in the 250-260 pound range while ILBs are 230-240 and more athletic. DL is most 280+ except Azubike at 260ish.

I wouldn't say what Vandy is putting on the field as a beacon of defensive excellence.

The 3-4 weakness is with Air Raid type spread teams though. It isn't awful against run spreads assuming they can apply pressure off the edge effectively and control interior

Against air raid,

WKU, MTSU, and Ole Miss are all spread passing teams. They're also all fairly prolific. Sure, it's not a "beacon of excellence," but they have held every team except Ole Miss and Austin Peay to season lows for season lows in points and yardage. Ole Miss was a season low in points until UF and only 40 more yards than Bama gave up. Austin Peay was not a low in points, but they got 1 TD on a 26 yard drive. Every offense except Austin Peay has been top 25 too. Seems pretty solid to me...
