Sorry to take a break from all of the sky is falling crowd, but as an amateur bassist for 40 years and growing up in Auburn, I'd enjoy hearing your stories about Auburn bands, music, concerts, etc.

Does anyone remember Bone Dali? Man or Astroman?

Toni Tennille (of Captain and Tennille) from the 70's is an AU alum, and Jimmy Buffett lived very close to one place I lived when I was in school, and everyone knows his music.

"In Cahoots" was a staple at County's BBQ, heavy on Fleetwood Mac covers, and made up of many Botany / Microbiology faculty and families with Professors Richard Shelby on mandolin and Will Blevins on banjo and Lynn Hammond on vocals. Sue me if I don't have the correct people with the correct instruments, but as an 8 year old sitting in Country's big rocking chair and listening to In Cahoots, it was awesome. Many of those people are still around here and there.

My first ever concert I attended at 17 was the Hoodoo Gurus show at the Lambda Chi House, next to McDonalds and produced largely by WEGL, AU's radio broadcasting station. It was awesome. I stole WEGL's promo posters of the show and they are still stapled to my ceiling in my bedroom.

REM, the Cult and others at JBE Coliseum or Student Act. Follow For Now, Bjork (not much interest). I also got to meet, talk with and get Vincent Price's autograph in my Edgar Allan Poe collections of stories after his talk at Student Act. If you didn't know, amongst other things, he dictated the story of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and that is his laughing in the video.

I miss Auburn and good live music. I know so many of you have worthwhile stories that I have missed out on over the past 25 years, though my wife and I did catch 311 live by chance. Awesome show. Please share. War Eagle.

ETA Dave Mathews Band at the Supper Club in 93 or 94?? was the absolute best show I ever saw there, and I saw plenty of bands touring the South at the Supper Club.

ETA Guadalcanal Diary was Ausome. More memories are coming back. Hep a brother out.

There was a band named Telluride that played at the Supper Club with regularity.

Music must be like golf or baseball. It’s very long odds to make it to the big time.

Telluride was a Supper Club staple. I remember bands like Sailor, the Keys, and the Reds from the mid 80s and Killough and Eckley from the late 70s. Menagerie was also a popular band from the late 70s. The guitarist from Sailor, Allen Hinds, is a successful studio musician these days.

In that era, there were a lot of concerts in BEMC and other venues on campus. The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Stephen Stills, Allman Brothers, Santana, Marshall Tucker, Little Feat, Commodores, Jimmy Buffet, Seals and Croft, Bruce Springsteen, were just some of the acts who came through -- and tickets were very cheap. The Springsteen show was free.

In the late 2000s when I was in school you would get a lot of today's country stars before they hit it big. Zac Brown, Luke Bryan, Eli Young Band, Brantley Gilbert all came through the bars in Auburn.

Literally just heard these guys on Sunday at the Helena 4th of July festival. They played off and on for 4 hours leading up to the fireworks and were really enjoyable.

Seriously? I had no idea.

I remember Big Audio Dynamite playing at the Theta Chi house my freshman year (92). I really wish I appreciated that more now.

Widespread Panic played at Beard Eaves. Also saw Hootie & the Blowfish there.

The Connells at the outdoor amphitheater over by Parker was my favorite memory though!

Who were the party bands when ya'll were in school?

As far as the Supper Club royalty at the time, I think it was Cheesebrokers for us

17th Floor

Hootie was the homecoming concert my freshman year (94), with Edwin McCain opening. Spring show was Brooks and Dunn, with David Ball and The Tractors opening.

Homecoming 1997 show was Tim McGraw with Sons of the Desert and Mindy McCready opening.

I remember the Beach Boys playing in JHS; Sugar Ray at Bibb-Graves Amphitheater; Pat Green at SkyBar.

When Kenny Chesney was doing his campus concert tour in the early 2000s, he played Supper Club. Apparently he cancelled his show in Oxford because a ticket broker got most of the tickets and was marking them up something crazy, and came into Auburn about 12 hours early and was just hanging out shooting pool some place in town.

Man or Astroman used to do a show at the house across the street from Southside Market on the corner of Gay and Samford. I lived a few houses up on Samford.

I've seen all you mentioned but In Cahoots. I saw Bjork in Frankfurt with my now ex-wife.

As I’ve mentioned before (ahem), I was part of the scene from 1981-83.

Speaking of Lambda Chi, my band played a memorable show there in the spring of ‘81. Had a blast with the Lizards. Even had the legendary Ben Roebuck sing lead vocals on “Louie Louie”. Good times

Freep, you're old. I thought I was old.

You may have known my older brother Douglass. Percussion and played in alot of bands in Auburn and Montgomery. He turned 61 last week.

Yep. Always packed!

Also, younger folks don’t know about the annual crawfish boil at Touchdowns. Those plastic pitchers of beer were fantastic.

Music scene was fantastic the years I was in Auburn. Dave Matthews didn’t play the supper club, it was a frat in 93 and then some barn like venue in 94, I remember seeing Blues Traveler out at that same location. Caught a number of Man or Astroman shows, they played in my friends “Clown House” one Halloween.

Wild Man Steve was an amazing deadhead with his used cd store and very connected to the jam scene. I know he was involved with a lot of the shows out at Webster’s Lake. Ton of Widespread Panic, JB solo, Leftover Salmon came through all the time (Derek Trucks sat in for one show at Supper Club when he was like 14), Col Bruce Hampton, Drivn Cryin, Jupiter Coyote, the Connells amphitheater show someone mentioned was fun, Medeski, Martin and Wood, String Cheese Incident played like three or four times, the Allmans did a fire show at Beard Eaves.

I also wasted a ton of time going to Atlanta and Birmingham for Phish, WSP and some late Dead shows. Wish I could remember some of the local bands at the time, but those brain cells are gone.

Remember a lot of these bands listed. The Pygmies were regulars in Auburn and are still out there getting it today. We never made it on the local scene. Our little ragtag band mostly just had impromptu parties at the practice space or at a bandmember's place. We had no idea what we were doing, but it sounded good to us.

Not a local band, but I saw Green Day play at a house in I think it was the summer of 91. Some website had some pictures of it but I can't remember which one. Had no idea who they were at the time. Only a couple years later when I saw them on MTV did I realize I had seen them because the lead singer has a unique look.

I also remember Starship coming through town and playing the Supper Club. This was early 90's and grunge was in full force. Didn't know anyone that went. I think someone said maybe 20-30 people showed up. That had to be and ultimate ego killer for those poor folks. That's when you know it may be time to hang it up.

Bama Gamblers - anybody else around my age remember them? Southern rock band from Auburn that was probably most active between like 2012-2015. They played all over the southeast around that time, but only had one album (2014, and it's still on Spotify and worth listening to) and don't seem to have been together in at least 5 years. They used to play at Zydeco when they'd come to Birmingham. They were really good, if they had been around in the 70s they could've gained some traction

I spent so much damn money at that store

Back when I was still on Facebook, Wildman Steve would always wish me a happy birthday. One time I jokingly thanked him for making me spend all my $ at his store and he genuinely thanked me for helping pay for his kids' school.

Jimmy Buffett at the BEMC where I lost my date but didn't care one bit.

Guadalcanal Diary, Dash Rip Rock and The Romantics at House band parties.

How I missed The Cult, I'll never know.

One of our little sisters was in a short-lived band named 'Fetish'.

Bone Dali and Gov't Cheese come to mind.
