All it took apparently was firing Ron Roberts

How much of an a-hole was this DC?

Enough that Wes McGriff, who is very close with Hugh Freeze and Keionte Scott, decided to move off-field mid season and then take another job.

In retrospect, it’s interesting to look back on this presser from Roberts and Montgomery. I think both of these guys knew they weren’t coming back. And maybe that helps explain the poor performance.

Glad he’s back. Hopefully someone learned a lesson on posting a coming back video before entering the portal on a whim one week later.

Which doesn’t make sense - surely Hugh told Crime that he was pushing out Roberts and to just hold tight.

That’s a good point, but I think at that point, the damage was already done. Freeze didn’t want to make a DC change mid season, and he was able to convince McGriff to move off field for the rest of the season. I think Crime may have made known to Freeze that Roberts was a douche, but it might have seemed like Freeze sided with Roberts. I trust Coach Freeze to do what’s right, and changing coordinators in the middle of the season would have been a terrible look. If some of the things that apparently happened in the locker room are true, he made the correct decision in distancing McGriff from Roberts and letting the rest of the season ride out until the offseason.

My question is this: is Freeze as bad or worse than Potato Boy with regard to hiring coordinators?

Cuz, frankly, the two that HE chose to hire Year One are not a good look.

P.S. frick you Ron “4th-and-31” Roberts.

In fairness, Freeze had Arnett coming until he got offered the MSU HC job. Montgomery was terrible though.

In his hiring defense, he probably had less of a choice than Coach "Prime".

You’re not going to get a top level OC when the HC is known for running the Offense. I think he felt he couldn’t run the offense and recruit in year 1. It’s looking like he is going to run it again this next year.

And yes DC was an underwhelming hire last year. But at most time through the season Robert’s defense was better than I expected.

It is pretty clear that both coordinators were hired with the goal of letting Hugh focus on recruiting as much as possible. Montgomery just sucked so Hugh is taking that side back over and is looking to bolster recruiting on the staff it seems.

Roberts was fine overall. Not great but not terrible. Apparently he is a pretty big dick and seeing how he handles twitter, I can believe it. You can't be just fine and also have that kind of personality.
