He is in his what, 6th year of head coaching? There is always a curve. I wouldn't label Saban as elite until year 2 at Bama.

ETA:

Saban has had 1 undefeated season in his career. So mistakes are common in coaching.

What has Gus done in the postseason besides 2013? I just don't get the Gus hype, we have had some our worst losses under him and his supposedly unstoppable offense.

I would be interested in looking at an "Acceptable Loss" ratio type metric

So first arbitrarily decide "I'm not going to penalize a coach for losing against a final AP**(Or Coaches w/e) top 15 opponent in his career" (Could be top 10 or top 25)

For top 15, count up the coach's total career games played vs Final AP Top 15 opponents and this is your "Acceptable Losses" for the coaches career

The Acceptable Loss Ratio = "Acceptable Losses" / Total Losses

>1 Ratio -> Coach upsets more teams than his team gets upset

=1 Ratio -> Coach is upset the same number of times he upsets other teams

<1 Ratio -> Coach is upset more often than he is upsets top teams

Why?

The logic basically is there shouldn't be a reward for winning a game as favorite nor a punishment for losing a game as underdog

Name coaches with 5 years experience who have shown themselves to be clearly better than Gus. The list gets small, fast. Saban...Dabo...Meyer...Shaw...maybe Franklin. It’s a mistake to assume Patterson or Leach will do better than what they have done just cause we are Auburn.

My above thing for acceptable losses isn't really directed at Gus btw

It's more of a gauge of if we view Auburn as a top program, the coach should win at that expected level

Tubs coached the best Auburn football team of all time and beat Alabama 6 times in a row, both things Gus will never be able to accomplish.

Tubs wouldn't beat Saban 6 times in a row either, so it is stupid to even bring that up

That is debatable.

I think we all know why that happened and NO program will beat Alabama 6 times in a row right now. That is not on Gus. Alabama is in the best run of a college program of all time. You can not put that on him

Tubbs also ran and hid like a little bitch when SAban came to town. Meanwhile Gus is doing as good as any program against them. He gave us one of the most memorable games in any of our lifetimes. Plus two trips to the National Championship and one victory.

He also took a program to the National Championship that was coming off what was probably the worst season in program history. Using the same basic players and a QB that didn't even play QB for most of his career.

I know there are lows but some of you act like Gus has not made any positive moves. He has. The last 7 years of Auburn football has had some of the best moments in the programs history. And a lot of that is directly impacted by Gus and his coaching.

Plus lets not forget, we are a top 10 team right now and looking very good to stay there or rise higher.

I think 2013 and the first half of 2014 everyone would agree Gus was amazing. It's the three years since that are troubling.

Nope.

Mike Dubose
Dennis Franchione
Mike Price
Mike Shula
Joe "Inside Trap" Kines
Nick Saban (2 years)

At least Nick Saban hasn't made Gus quit, like Tuberville and Meyer.

Tuberville lost his last 3 against UGA, priming the pump for what came after.

In 2006, he lost to a 6-4 UGA team with a 9-1 Auburn squad.

UGA 2015/2016
Gus Malzahn struggles against Georgia in general. Without Nick Marshall and Cam Newton, Auburn has scored the following against Georgia:

2009: 24
2011: 7
2014: 7
2015: 13
2016: 7

11.6 PPG.

2014 was flat out embarrassing considering the talent on the team, even though Duke Williams was still recovering from the sprained MCL. That team still had Ricardo Louis, Quan Bray, Sammie Coates, Cam Artis-Payne, Corey Grant and a seasoned offensive line. The first drive looked flawless, and the rest of the game was miserable.

Hopefully having Jarrett Stidham at QB can change this trend...

We were missing key pieces in 14-16. Not having Sammie killed us in 14.

What has he done in November when it counts and in the postseason? One win against Memphis. One miracle against UGA and the kick six against Bama and a bunch of embarrassing losses.

Say what you want, but never call the Kick 6 a miracle.

Agree with you on that one, I should have said one miracle and a kick six. I was at both of those games.
