imo, for Malzahn's offense to work effectively he's gotta connect on the deep ball... and he loves to use double-moves.

I think we're gonna see our WRs and (hopefully) QBs play better in the new system... but we've gotta get the ball deep.

Exactly. You read all these folks (particularly opposing teams fans) that claim Gus's offense only works with a running QB freak like Cam and you can tell who really isn't grasping what they see with Gus's offense and what makes it tick at a high level.

Having a QB that can strike on the deep ball is what makes his offense go from being very good to stellar. That keeps the DBs back and honest, which opens up the middle of the field for the draws/counters/QB option plays, which in turn opens up things for the sweeps and wheel routes.

Gus needs a QB with some mobility in order to run the read option and be a threat to get 5-6 yards and keep them honest, but that's about it. The deep ball is far more important. The lack of a QB that could do that hurt us badly in 2009, and resulted in our offense being hit or miss. And in 2011 it resulted in us sucking a great deal with the new offensive line (and Chizik handcuffing Gus).

During the middle of the 2009 season, when Todd's arm went to shite, he really struggled with arm strength... we really struggled to move the ball. The deep pass is critical for this offense.

Yeah, watching him play against LSU was just brutal that year, we'd have wide open WR and he would just underthrow them like crazy. He couldn't really get it beyond 25 yards accurately, it was a lot like watching Cox in his last year and a half or so.

Agree and this will be what keeps Wallace from starting imo.

Wallace was never in a pass ahppy offense so he never developed his arm. I have a hard time believing he won't improve his arm strength during the offseason to make him a very competitive candidate for the starting job

that's a good point on wallace's arm strength... it just depends if Frazier can actually push JW or is he done?

I think wallace can be effective from 30 yards, or so.... but we'll see... he can make up for arm strength in other areas -- confidence, awareness, knowledge of offense, work ethic, quickness, speed.... in other words, pretty much everything the other two QBs on campus DONT have.

The bad part about his offense it relys heavy on blocking wr's so Bray and Reed are going to be useless in that aspect. We ran the ball so well in 2010 thanks in large part to Kodi Burns and T. Zac. I think losing those blockers on the edge had a lot to do with our offensive troubles in 2011.

Ding Ding Ding!

What I've said all along about Reed and Bray. There's no reason they should be on the field if they aren't hauling in a ton of passes because they are an outright liability on blocking assignments. Really the only positions they should see the field a lot are as a punt or kick returner. Rivals and all the recruiting services for whatever reason still rates these little scat receivers 4 or 5 stars if they can run circles around slow high school competition when in the college game that advantage is mostly nullified so they really don't contribute much.

Gus is the type of coach who wants to take a downfield shot early in the game to keep the D honest. Also, as much shite as he gets for the jet sweep and screens, there was also that sweep to the right side of the field with Dyer that always seemed to be good for 30 yards or more, if not a TD. His Offense relies heavily on quickness (getting the ball back to the ref immediately after the play is over, snapping the ball with more than 20 seconds on the play clock, etc.) and because of that, he doesn't rely on the OL to hold blocks for ridiculous amounts of time (especially when he has a mobile QB), but makes sure that they hold their assignments long enough to make the play develop.

He often describes it as an old school Wing T type O focused on getting the ball North and South, only difference being that he runs it out of the shotgun.y biggest problem with his O is that I have a hard time remembering passing plays that weren't Play Action, even on third down and 6+ yards to go.

If he has a mobile QB, which is pretty much all we have on the roster, he probably won't run as much PA, since the qb has the threat to run, but the passing game is based heavily off PA, so that could be a concern, especially if the passing game isn't working during a giving game.

Very True. We do have a couple of jacked recievers in Ricardo Louis and Melvin Ray, so hopefully they can come along enough to see significant action to help out in that aspect.
