I agree. He needs to run the read. And he needs to understand he is not too valuable to risk running. He can run, and that is probably what he needs to do until he gets his head right.

I actually told one of my workers this today. I really want to JJ another half against MSU to run a version of the offense more similar to what Cam ran, some designed runs for the quarterback, a few read options and then throw it over them. JJ has a higher ceiling than White has at this point that we know of and I want to give him more time but this season is wasted until we lose again. If we find a way to win this Saturday, we have a couple weeks to install some more stuff to help our JJ and maybe he can find his groove at that point.

If you do a cut up of JJ this season, you can find some nice throws. He is making bad reads/decisions and getting happy feet/nervous.

-Designed runs/RO opens up the offense and eliminates defenders JJ clearly has a hard time recognizing.

-Simple reads then QB scrambles eliminates mistakes and builds confidence.

Start with 1 read, if it isn't there tell him to run and get 1-2 yds. Earlier, JJ is trying to do a Brady/Manning read the entire defense and make decision. We need to teach him to read target defenders and make decisions from there. It limits the ceiling but also easier to do

shite, I thought we would run the read option a LOT against LSU. The qb keeper was open so often against Jack State I thought Gus was just not wanting for JJ to keep it so he wouldn't show anything to LSU and JJ would run a keeper 8 times or so against LSU.

Shows how much I know.

Does JJ have the necessary skill to run though?

I had actually convinced myself that that is what we would see from the start of the season. We can still hope...

I'm convinced he does not. And that is why our offense will sputter.

Jamarcus Russel had a higher ceiling that Peyton Manning. You don't have to be a freak athlete to be a good QB, not that JJ is one. If we're just talking pure athleticism, let's put Jason Smith at QB. Otherwise, White should get his chance.

My mind would be completely blown if JJ can salvage himself and even return to being average, at this point. He looks completely lost. I would love for him to end up being amazing, but that's not realistic to expect.

1. JJ will start Saturday. I have zero inside info, but I would be beyond surprised if he wasn't taking the first snap. If that's a problem with any of you, prepare yourself now.

2. I said this exact thing Saturday. He's not a pocket passer. The game moves to fast for him. With him running the zone read, he becomes less "read" oriented and more "react" oriented which could be huge for his confidence. We need a change, and this could be effective on many levels. If it doesn't work out, then look to switch QBs

Well said. I wonder if that would be delpoyed though. Up to this point, Gus has shown to be very stubborn with him. Making him try to be a QB he is not.

That is the most frustrating part of the season so far. You can't force a player to be something he isn't. Good coaches find ways to get the best out of their players abilities. I keep having to remind myself that Gus is still very young in coaching years with this being his 4th full year as HC at this level. There is still a bit of a learning curve with him, too. Hopefully he recognizes this and adapts himself.

As bad as JJ has been, the play calling has also been abysmal. We've been running the same plays as last year with no Nick Marshall to run the ball. I know it's been limited because of how bad JJ has been, but it's so predictable. I don't know if Sean White will solve our problems, but the coaches need to step it up as much as anyone.
