James Owens broke the color barrier at Auburn and Lutzie was the epitome of an Auburn man.
At the very least, make it a "special" number that has to be earned or rewarded to a special player.
Thoughts?

That is a good reason.

A number is a number to me so I don't really care

I wouldn't mind having it be a number of honor or something. The team votes on who they think deserves to wear it or something for that season. I've always liked that type of thing.

I can get on board.

We are fortunate to have many former lettermen that were Auburn men. If we retired a number for all of them, we wouldn't have enough numbers to field a team

I hope our starting QB gets voted to wear the number

Plus, Anthony Swain and his tragic knee injury.

We should reserve the number 43 for that special player to wear each year against Arky.

We should honor players- NOT NUMBERS.

To wear a 7, 88, 34 a coach should have to nominate a player.

We have too many retired numbers already.

Honor them by continuing the number on selected players.

Sorry, no. NO PLAYER should ever wear 7, 34, or 88 again.

Of those, only Bo was metaphysically great. The best athlete ever.

Sullivan and Beasley were certainly my first Auburn heroes, but neither is in the conversation of "greatest" player at his position like Bo.

Ring of honor? Yes. Retiring jerseys? No.

Auburn doesn't retire jerseys, we just don't let kids wear certain numbers.

I'm about to be very unpopular on here after I say this but Phillip made a very dumb decision that cost him his life. A decision that could have ruined someone else's life and I can in no way condone holding him in higher light than any other player that played for Auburn. He should be honored just as much as King Dunlap, very little and less than Tommy Trott who didn't drink and drive.

No, no and no. Bring back 7, 88, and 34. Do a ring of honor.

Phillip Lutz didn't drink and drive, so...he was a passenger.

Him and the drivers BAC were so high that he should have still known better. I can't ever look at him as a role model.

Good reason

What separates Kodi Burns and Lutz other than one is no longer with us? Both were/are great examples of "Auburn men".

If you've never been drunk riding in a car, idk what to say. But i'm definitely not going to chastise a dead man for doing something that has been done infinite times. Sucks to go out in that light, but hey, shite happens RIP Lutz

I've never been too drunk to voluntarily get in a car with a drunk driver nor let my friend drink and drive. I knew Lutz. He was a good guy no doubt, but there is a reason his dad gives speeches about that night. Everyone involved made the mistake of allowing someone to drive intoxicated.

I have no problem with people saying Lutz was an "Auburn man." I do have a problem with the near deification that has occurred. He isn't deserving of having his number retired based on the historical standards Auburn has kept
