With the transition to Muschamp's new scheme that asks DBs to play a different role and the elimination of an entire DB position, what positions will the DBs find themselves this year?

Last Year's Positions for returning players (some switched but this should be close)

CB- Jonathan Jones, Josh Holsey, TJ Davis, Joe Turner, Kamryn Melton, Kalvaraz Bessent

Safety- Jonathan Ford, Derrick Moncreif, Tray Matthews, Stephen Roberts, Khari Harding

Star- Nick Ruffin, MacKenro Alexander, Markell Boston

** Notes

-Nick Ruffin and Stephen Roberts played CB in HS Ruffin was recruited at CB

-Jonathan Ford started at CB before moving to S due to depth concerns

-Josh Holsey plays both CB and S

-Khari Harding had some flirtations with LB

Not to hijack your thread but did all these guys redshirt this year:

Joe Turner, Bessent, Matthews, Boston? Did I miss any?

As far as your question I would imagine Nick Ruffin moves to corner and plays well. Boston to safety and he was (correct me if I am wrong) the sleeper recruit we got at the end of the cycle that Bama also offered. Don't remember Joe Turner at all. Hopefully Bessent gained some damn weight.

I imagine most of them redshirted. Tray Matthews by rule redshirted since he couldn't play.

Last minute JUCO transfer pickup we took from Wazzou. Been nonexistent since he arrived

Stephen Roberts was recruited as a safety, IIRC.

I would think Ford would be a prime candidate to play that "Center Field" safety that Boom uses a good bit. With his closing speed, that would seem like a natural fit for him. He wouldn't have to worry about run support or covering receivers as much.

I believe you are correct. Most sites had him listed at CB but I remember hearing safety early on.

Though if he can play CB in any capacity I say give him a shot. We should do a Philadelphia Eagles Invincible style open try out for CBs

I disagree.

I don't think he has the hips for CB.

ETA: yes, I realize it wasn't all his fault and it's extremely tough to cover Cooper. However, his positioning & reactions on that play were awful.

Roberts played CB/QB at Opelika but the Auburn staff brought him in as a safety

He could have played it better but it wasn't horrible. In that cover 2 scheme were throwing up on that play, it absolutely requires a jam at the LOS to avoid exactly what happened there.

Amari Cooper was full speed with the option to run a skinny post, fade or curl. As you'll see in the gif you posted and the one I post below, he chose fade/curl. To expect him to rotate hips and keep up with the best WR in the country is hard.

It also wasn't absurd for him to believe that he would help over the top from Jermaine Whitehead since Amari split their zones and Whitehead chose to bracket Deandrew White who Therezie looked to be in man coverage on.

To add on just how hard that is to rotate hips on a receiver starting from a stopped position let alone full speed Amari Cooper, Saban and Alabama teaches the 3step shuffle run technique and not backpeddling.

I think you nailed it.

I really think Ruffin could be an elite corner with his size. Also I think Ford showed flashes of being an outstanding safety but had some major blown coverages. Before he leaves AU has a chance to be really good.

I think Jones/Holsey at CB and Mathews/Ford at safeties will be our starters next season. Lots of speed back there

I know it's not easy to cover Cooper and that's why I hesitated to post that gif because I knew someone would go on & on about it.

However, Ford played that like shite. Mincy gets shite for getting burned for TDs and Ford on that play was left in the dust badly.

I don't believe he's a better corner than safety.

And after rewatching the USCe game, it's easy to see why the secondary sucked the second half of the year. Simple, miscommunication. Players out of position. Late getting set up. Finger pointing. Just all around confusion on the back end. And Holsey played like shite that game. He does not need to play Safety next year.

Ford couldn't have played it well. You're using a shitty arse example where he has to try and cover for someone else's mistake. Give me a better gif man than that bullshite

I don't think he has the ball skills to splay safety. He's fast and physical. Let's try him at cb. We know what he can do at safety.

Btw your gif shows how bad he was at safety if anything lol

Ford is a safety... As mentioned by some others, he doesn't appear to have the fluid hips corners need... in fact, outside of Jones, most of our DBs are stiff through their hips... That's why Therezie couldn't play DB.

fricking typical. Ford gets embarrassed on a simple fake to the outside on a go pattern and it's Mincy's fault.

If that's the case, then I'd really hate to see what Ford would do matched up 1-v-1 on the outside when he's told to play 10 yards off the LOS. I'd run that play on Ford every time. Then we can blame the pass rush for him getting torched, I guess.
