I do enjoy being overly negative at times on AU boards to rustle jimmies, but this is a sort of serious question for people that know football. My internal monologue as I wrote this post, doe:

The season is obviously young and I don't think I am ready to hit the panic button until I see what we day next Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge. But, I was thinking about something. From an on the field product through the first 29 games of their career at Auburn:

Gus: 22-7
Gene: 24-5

Gene had a magical season in his second year with a dynamic JUCO QB with many clutch late wins
Gus had a magical season in his first year with a dynamic JUCO QB with many clutch late wins

Gene's first year, we started out 5-0 and the wheels came off
Gus' 2nd year, we started out 5-0, and the wheels came off after the Ole Miss game

Gust and Gene both started out their 3rd years with a close wins over a decent power 5 team and were lucky to win a game against a far inferior program

There are people on here very close to the program, do you think the program is in better shape at this point under Gus than it was at this point under Chizik? I just have a terrible feeling that this season is going to look like our 2011 season. Don't get me wrong, I think Gus is a wonderful human being and a fabulous offensive mind. I just hope he can get things turned around because we have been pretty awful as a program since the Ole Miss game last year. The on the field issues appear to be pretty similar to what we saw in Chizik's tenure.

Other eerily similar things

Both first names begin with G
Both last names have a Z in them
Both have been known to have horrible game day attire (shacket vs short sleeve turtleneck)
Both really go to town on gum during games

If I remember correctly, Chiz's recruiting classes were good, but weren't making it to the playing field.

Gus' has a much better staff around him than Chiz did as well. Auburn fans read way to much preseason garbage there were reason to believe this team would struggle out of the gate. There are also reasons to believe this team will improve and be strong by the end of the season but can they survive then next two weeks?

I don't get the feeling that we are losing the team like Chizik did and Gus doesn't have a runaway set of coaches that are secretly undermining the team philosophy.

My big problem with Gus so far that was easily correctable to this point but isn't at this point is this: we never play backups when we have the chance. If we do play backups, we don't allow them to run a full offense to begin to learn. In two years, Jeremy Johnson has thrown 78 passes and actually started a game last year. There is no way that he shouldn't have been getting garbage time and actually running the full offense in two years of us playing pretty well.

On paper, there are a lot of similarities but realistically there are huge management gaps between the two.

^^ THIS ^^

Right now mainly I see a team that is dealing with a slew of injuries on defense & a headcase at QB. If we get at least Lawson & Mathews back for LSU this is a totally different defense.

We are not seeing the ridiculous off field issues. All the guys we are signing are making it to school. We are starting to put players again in the NFL including guys that go undrafted. I also saw WAY more effort out there than under Chiz in 2011, 2012.

Gus's secretary is named Lincoln.
Chiz's secretary was named Kennedy.

Both are Sagittarius.

Wear size 36 pants

Propensity for strange coaching get ups. Chiz the smock. Gus the pullover vest even when its hot.

Both need to get the damn bagman network to do better so we dont lose recruits to bama.

I would add that Gus played a big part in getting those 24 wins for Gene.

Off the field? Yes. On it? Not sure about that.

It's really a pattern with Auburn coaches in general. Bowden, Tuberville and Chizik all had perfect seasons, then mediocre season(s), then flamed out miserably in their last season. Looking back, it seems Tuberville was the best coach of any of them. I'm hoping Gus can break the cycle, but it's really just extremely puzzling.
