Don't think he'll be back next year though. His cap hit is too big.

They'll save $8.5mill when they cut Jared Allen. They save $11mil by cutting Johnson.

I don't know if they find a better DE than Johnson for a significant savings though if healthy.

Johnson didn't do jack shite this year, before or after he came back from his injury.

Kony Ealy, however, could have had a chance to be Super Bowl MVP tonight if Mike Shula hadn't been a total retard.

Too bad the NFL puts two weeks off prior to the SB. Seems like teams lose their rythm.

Ya but his contract ends this year. In FA, Panthers would have to commit long term to a quality DE. They will have to resign Short, Norman and Star Lei in next couple years. Not enough money

Johnsons contract ends and he is only 29, he should be able to be at least productive as a #2 DE. Smart cap move is draft 1-2 DE and hope one works out. Keep Johnson/Allen

Also keep in mind Charles Johnson had a sack every post season game (3 sacks) and a forced fumble despite splitting time between Jared Allen/Ealy
Not unreasonable to think Johnson wasn't 100%healthy this year until playoffs given he was on the IR for 8 weeks.

Johnson is only 29, it isn't unreasonable to expect 6-7 Sacks and be a rotation with some rookies. Also, he is a team captain, probably would bean asset to develop said rookies

They'll sign short to an extension.

They'll franchise Norman.

Lotuleilei has another year on his contract since he was a 1st rounder and the Panthers can (and have/will) pick up his 5th year option.

Johnson has a $15 million cap hit next year.

The Panthers can save $11 million if they cut him post June 1st.

He aint' gonna make it at $15 million for 6-7 sacks.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Stewart, Tolbert, Johnson, and Allen all gone. So we are definitely drafting an edge rusher again. CAP could be the primary back next year so I hope he is ready.

In Panther's eyes, he only is getting paid $11mil for 6-7 sacks. That $4mil is gone either way

Where would they spend that money anyways? They need OT, S, DE and WR

OT- Michael Oher was solid and Daryl Williams looked great until injury. No reason to sign a FA should go draft
S- Coleman and Harper are solid for 2017 so smart move is draft not FA
WR- There aren't any good FA WRs this year and they have Benjie/Ginn/Funchess + will likely draft somoene.
DE- No good 4-3 DEs, which is an expensive position to begin with

They should be able to resign Star & Short in 2016 while keeping Johnson. That will give them a ton of room in 2017 when Johnson falls off and their DEs are on rookie contracts

Throw a healthy Benjamin into that WR core, and things should get better quickly... his skill set is so different than their other main targets.

I really thought Funchess played well for them... he seemed to have the most sure hands in the games I watched. I was also impressed with Brown.

They need more speed at RB IMO... Outside of Whitaker, the other three guys are slow as hell.

They should trade for Andre Ellington

Panthers need a real threat at KO return. Sure it is great for commentators they throw 3rd string qb out there. But Webb is slow as hell and will never get a decent return.

Tedd Ginn but he'd get tired running endless go routes and KO returns

KO returns are overrated though to be honest. Only 10 players had an average of >25yards on KOR with at least 20 returns.

Just take the touchback and call it a day. No sense in paying a guy for an extra 5yards

You have the right to be wrong. In the past 4 years since the rule, the NFL avg 9 KO Return TDs/year. In the 4 years before the rule change they averaged 18 TDs/year

When the NFL moved KOs to the 35yd line, they killed the kick off return unless you have a top 2-3 returner. Right now, the average line of scrimmage for the NFL after a kickoff is the 22 yard line. So the NFL's league wide KO return game is netting only an additional 2 yards

LINK

According to Football Outsiders

1994-2010:
Touchback %: 11.3%
Return %: 84.9%

2011-2013:

Touchback %:45.5%
Return%: 51.5%

I'm not saying go get a guy strictly for KR. But it's a plus to go after people like sproles that can do more than just be a KR like Dante Hall. In my mind, every yard counts.

The variance of starting field position is 1.79 according to that article. That means you aren't even likely to find a KO returner that will net you more than a yard or 2 on the KO
