Austin Wiley is getting rave reviews at U19 Team USA tryouts.

China Okeke is also getting only positive reviews but mostly "he can really play too" or praising his "effort"

Both Chuma Okeke and Austin Wiley made it past the first cut to 18 players.

Wiley is expected to make the team, Okeke probably has some work to do. Coach Cal, who is the Team USA U19 coach, referred to Austin Wiley as "a monster"

Okeke has been wearing a brace sitting out and expected to have an MRI today on his knee

Okeke has been sent home because of the injury. It doesn't appear to be too bad though.

Basketball Weekly Update (includes some old stuff just to have in one post)

-Auburn has announced they will host George Mason for '17-18. We are looking to add a P5 opponent

-Auburn has added 6'4 Combo PG/SG Samir Doughty, VCU transfer. Samir avg 9 ppg, 3.6rpg and 2.1 apg as a RS FR. He will have 2 years of eligibility at AU starting in '18-19 season

-Bruce will be on the NBA's predraft special from 5 to 7

Austin Wiley
-Made U19 Team USA basketball team

-Measured at 6'11 250lb with 7'5 wingspan at Team USA camp. Claims to have lost about 3-5% Bodyfat% from last year and in much better shape

-Kentucky beat writer Kyle Tucker said Wiley made a case for best player on the floor during scrimmages

Chuma Okeke

-Made it past 1st Team USA cuts before being a medical casualty (left knee)

-Measured 6'7 233lb, 7' wingspan

-Kyle Tucker raved about Okeke and said he definitely looked like he belong/could have made the team despite being the lowest rated HS player in attendance

Wiley got jacked. Looked like he's improved offensively too.

We should be much better defensively with Wiley's physical progression and the addition of Okeke.

It kind of sucks that the entire SEC had to step up their basketball game at the exact same time as Auburn. Just a couple years ago I would have felt confident about having a team with this talent being a lock to make the tournament. But almost every other SEC team is also going to be improved next season, so its going to be a battle.

Damn he looks so much more confident and less goofy with ball in his hands. Some nice post moves in there and a good little jumper. If Pearl can get team to play through him we gonna be nasty this year

I'm hoping now that Dunans is gone, our team chemistry will improve in a real positive way. Should make a huge difference

My only concern is that our SOS is likely going to be garbage next year. Outside Kentucky, maybe Florida, we probably don't have any top 25 teams. We could be in a 2015 South Carolina situation where winning 23-24+ is still a bubble season

Bryce Brown will be our #3 PG according to Bruce

I know you're just reporting what Bruce said but i fully expect Dunbar to be our 3rd ball handler once he arrives on campus. He seems to be a better fit as far of initiating the offense, as well as simply getting the ball up the court. We all know that is certainly not a strength of Brown's game.

I think Desean Murray and Malik Dunbar both give us guys who can play two, three, four

"Can play" being the key words here because Dunbar will play mostly 2, with Murray playing mostly 4 because of who they can guard on defense.

He has been exclusively talked about at PG with some articles claiming he is a "true PG" or "traditional PG" ... I think that is just due to his size + our lack of PG options

I've always viewed Davion Mitchell as being a true PG in college and beyond. I don't truly understand why others haven't felt that way.

Purifoy will do much better at the 3 IMO.

I agree. I think the hope was that Purifoy could be an improved/more dynamic Tyler Harris. Clearly that failed

I viewed Purifoy playing the stretch-4 more out of necessity and allowing our best players to be on the floor than a project failed. We needed him there and he did his best but it clearly wasn't his best fit. He is obviously a wing, so he was a mis-match having to guard other 4's in the paint. Now that we have depth at the 4 with Murray, McLemore and Spencer, Purifoy can play his natural position. I also feel Purifoy is a better option than Brown, of being a primary ball handler.

I feel the additions of Mitchell, Dunbar and Murray will greatly improve our defense and toughness as well.

Yep.. we might want to enjoy having Wiley this next season because I feel it'll be his last in the college game. He is going to be a beast this year.

Hopefully the "NBA doesn't use traditional big men" trend can give us another year with him

If he developed a 3FG game and good overall shooting game he would be a sure fire lotto pick

Hopefully.. but how young he is and how the NBA drafts on potential rather than immediate impact, I could see a team like the Spurs want to draft and mold him. Mid-late 1st Rounder

If we can keep our roster together past this year, and hold onto to EJ Montgomery, then I have a feeling we will be just fine in recruiting because our success will send a message to prospects.

It takes repeated reps and self discipline to perfect it but one concern about Wiley I have, is just like most young big men they have a tendency to bring/or put the ball down in traffic. It's a natural motion because you're trying to get your legs under you but whether it's a pass, rebound or post up, he needs to work on continuing to use his height to his advantage by keeping the ball above the fray of defenders.

If we have the type of year we're capable of having, I don't see Wiley, or maybe even Heron staying, tbh. I wouldn't be surprised if both had breakout campaigns.
