People who shop at Publis are pretty much paying a premium for the "atmosphere" while they shop. I don't know what kind of self respecting man would pay for that.

Give me as shitty of a grocery store as possible with super low prices.

This is taking it too far. I'll pay a slight premium for fast lines, quality/fresh produce/meat and the grocery store to be clean/organized/stocked shelves.

For example, I don't shop at Walmart for groceries because that place sucks at all 3 + is farther from my house

The difference in "atmosphere" from Kroger/Winn Dixie to Publix is marginal at best and very clearly not worth the premium they charge. Only time I shop there is because it takes me <1min to drive from house to parking lot for quick trips.

I was one of the few that went to Walmart when I was in Auburn. I lived on that side of town and I quickly got good at self-checkout. Great prices.

I've got zero problems with Walmart after becoming better than the Walmart employees on self-checkout

Kroger is closer + their sale prices beat Walmart prices making it almost a wash. The biggest issue though is their deli/butcher/produce sections are rough

Not for me it wasn't. Walmart and Winn Dixie were the only stores under consideration for me. Winn-Dixie is pretty good too. No way in hell I was driving all the way to Kroger or Publix.

Winn Dixie has gone to hell since they got bought out. Their stuff is barely above generics here in FL. Publix is expensive, but they do have decent organic pricing when on sale. I wish there were Krogers down here, they were always nice stores. I do miss the late night Kroger missions to see hot sorority girls buying cookie dough.

I can walk to Publix and drive ~3-5min to Kroger. Walmart/WinnDixie are out of the question for me

That's exactly how I shop there. My wife and I can easily find substitutes (meaning whatever is on sale). I think my Kroger card says I've already "saved" over $600 on the year.. Plus, the fuel perks are pretty sweat on top of that.

As for meat and produce, we try our best to do the farmer's market and/or grow our own. We also have a healthy supply of deer meat and I fish.

I see only one other person in this thread had the pleasure to shop at what we then lovingly called "Stupid Foods".

Does Mrs. Teresa still work the night shift of the self checkout at old Kroger?

Maybe, there also is that older guy with the mustache that is almost too helpful/excited about knowing self checkout tricks

I don't know, but if you are talking about Bernie Reber, he is Kroger God.

Bernie was a year or two ahead of me in school, but he was "deemed" to be a bit slow back in the day. He started working at Kroger part time in high school. After graduating AHS, he went full time. This was 30 years ago. He is an awesome guy who has made a career (for himself) of serving Auburn people from Kroger.

I was born in '70. Before there was Kroger, we had two choices: Winn Dixie at Glendean Shopping Center (which then became Lang's Sporting Goods after Kroger was built and helped push them out of business, and now, it is some video / electronics store. Sorry I don't remember the name), or, the A&P (I don't know what it is now, but it was along the tracks close to the old Depot), which mostly served the Cary Woods (still developing at the time), the students, and black community.

Kroger came along and changed all that. I remember it being built while I was a Grace Methodist kindergarten next door about '75. Good memories - everything was simpler at age 5, but from what I heard, AU football sucked until we recruited a few RBs. William Andrews, Joe Cribbs, James Brooks.
