There is a lot of talk that he plans on coming back for senior year to finish school. This would be coming from his mom

That's a nice chunk of money if he signs, early second round. Hard decision because its a lot of money. At least he's already 3 years in college though. However, it's extremely hard to make it in the Majors. Majority just go through the farm system for years until they even make a debut(if ever). Its always good to have a degree in case it doesn't work out.

He gone. He will get a good chunk in the signing bonus. There really isn't much upside in coming back.

Best wishes to him!

Honestly, I think it is still 50-50 he stays. He comes from a good family and his mom, who is very successful, is pushing hard for him to finish his degree. I've heard it now from two people who work with her

His aunt flat out told me he wasn't going pro about 6-8 months ago

I agree. MLB will pay for him to finish his degree and he can do a Cam Newton type degree copmletion program.

Downside risk is too high

LOL @ anyone thinking that he's not signing. He wouldn't have been drafted where he was had he informed teams that he wanted to go back to school. It would also be an absolutely stupid decision for a college Junior to return after being selected 39th overall.

You can always FINISH a degree if it doesn't work out too. And, at that point, you'll likely be finishing it with a few years of pretty darned good money in your bank account.

By the way, he wasn't picked in the 2nd round, he was picked in Competitive Balance Round A, which is after the 1st round but before the 2nd. If it was thought of like the NFL did it, it would be called a "supplemental 1st rounder".

I like that the linked article points out that only 5 Auburn players have been selected higher than Grier, Gregg Olson (4th overall), Frank Thomas (7th overall), Gabe Gross (15th overall), Chris Bootcheck (20th overall), and Mark Bellhorn (35th overall). The worst major league career of those guys was Bootcheck and he played in the majors off and on for 7 years.

I'm with you. It is stupid not to sign.

Just know that his mom is telling people that he may go back to school

Yes my point was he's already a junior, he's in a great spot. He's going to sign unless he truly thinks he's a top ten pick. I guess I was commenting on some that don't go back to finish or leave very early or out of HS. My other point is the staying in the farm leagues for years and never getting to the Majors is rough, you just need a back up plan. That is just a general statement.

Exactly. You lose all leverage by getting drafted as a Senior. Get started in a pro organization. They're the best teachers.

He'll definitely go. Polished college hitters have better chances of making it to the MLB.

I expect him to be a quick riser depending on how the dbacks work with him on his swing

Pretty sure his mom does very well in business. Not about money for her, she wants her son to "get his education"

I think he should go. Just saying that his family supposedly is pushing for him to stay. Doubt he says no to 1.6mil or whatever

I think you misunderstood.

Anfernee can use his remaining year as leverage for more $

(What I said) Has nothing to do with his mom

I think you were perfectly clear that his Mom was putting out the story as $$$ leverage for HIM.

While typically I'd agree, these rumors I've heard aren't sourced to him.

I know some people who work with his mom, she's maintained he is going to finish his degree for a long time and draft position hasn't changed that. I personally have heard from his aunt that his mom "won't let him leave without a degree"

I still think he signs. He'd be stupid not to. Just that it isn't as cut and dry as you'd think

You know I meant finish before going pro

I'm sure some smart soul will explain that the MLB will pay for him to go back to school.
