I agree that we should be looking a little better than we are on DL recruiting. With that said I am not the panicking type either. Somehow through the years we have seemed to hold our own for the most part, but having one or two big names already on board would be nice.

Sure, but the other schools also had better D's (for the most part).

UGA has a brand new defense

Sort of. Still same scheme plus with a DC that has proven to have strong defenses.

Our defense has been pretty piss poor for a while now. Even with a coach as good as Johnson, we need to show it on the field.

Other teams have done a good job selling that we are a one hit wonder. Give it time.

Also Pruitt is spereheading the D Line recruitment for UGA and he already had a preexisting relationship with their D Line targets as he ran the same D at FSU.

Exactly.

I'm not arguing that we aren't struggling some with our DL recruitment, but it isn't like our coaches just forgot how to recruit. There is a very real reason behind it.

Yup! We are already in the top 2 or 3 for a number of 2016 DL kids. If we don't close the deal on at least a couple of them then I'll worry as there will be no excuses at that point.

While there clearly are negative factors out there, we shouldn't be THIS BAD at recruiting.
As an 'elite' program with 2 NC appearances inside 5 years, multiple 1st round draft picks and a slim depth charter after this year and especially year after that, there should be at least some somewhat big name guys on our radar.

If you'll remember,.. we were in the top 2 or 3 for a number of the 2015 kids last year. At one point, there were people on here beating their chests, thinking we may actually land TT AND Payne! It's absurd to act like CRG just started recruiting these kids this year, and is "behind". You dont think he recruited Thompson or Payne, or any of the other highly recruited DT's when he was at UGA? I understand the scheme is different, but those 2 could have played in either. He DEF recruited them before... and he has DEF fallen behind on the DT recruiting this year, no matter how you want to spin it

C'mon brah, I'm supposed to believe that Garner (a guy who has been recruiting this region for well over a decade) supposedly has "no relationships built" with these kids because he was recruiting for a 3-4 defense and now we're running a 4-3? He still knows the same kids, at this stage in the game it barely makes a difference as you still see these 3-4 and 4-3 schools fighting for the same recruits for the most part (eg: our battle with UGA for Ray Drew, back while they were still running a 3-4 and we had Chizik's 4-3).

Its a lazy argument. You talk as if he's recruiting completely new players that he's never seen or talked to before. Yes, there is some variation that is to be expected, but nowhere near what you presume.

Sure he did. He also recruited them to be in a 34 and talked it up. Transitioning that relationship isn't as easy as people make it out to be.

It is also still extremely early. We can still land Payne. Thompson is not over just because he committed.

People are acting like the sky is falling with this recruiting class and it is August for christ sake

Yup. I'll throw another one out: Byron Cowart. I vividly remember a reporter from Florida tweeting out that we may have been his leader very early in the process after we offered. Where has that gone? Nowhere...we're not even in the picture for Cowart anymore. I never expected us to get him as he's from a heavy UF feeder school, but he's not even showing interest in us anymore.

We had "early interest" in a lot of top 2015 DL's and have for the most part either fizzled out completely or flat out lost battles to other schools.

Ever think this could be a mutual disinterest?

We lost ground on D'Andre Walker to Tennessee...a school that has been shite for the past decade and whom we completely outclassed last year. Surely we look to be in much better direction than UT.

Look at the battle for Walker: its us (a defense he fits perfectly, which needs edge rushers badly BTW), a school that wants to use him as a LB (he wants to play DE), and shitty-arse Tennessee. Why are we stagnating so badly in this fight?

Mutual disinterest for a 5-star DE that fits our scheme perfectly? One that has dominated the camp circuit?

Maybe he just likes those schools better? I mean I don't know what to tell you, I can't read the kid's mind. Nobody here is saying we are doing lights out on our DL recruiting, but you guys are practically in hysterics over it.

How about we wait until NSD to go complete melt? Just once.

I have no idea, but there can be plenty of reasons that we might have stopped recruiting him. There are also plenty of reasons he may have backed off of us. We all look at Auburn pretty different than any recruit does, because we are fans. That complete warps how we see how any recruiting battle should unfold. Some people just don't like our school. It is okay. Ever think he was high on us just because of the season we had?

You guys are acting like just because we may have a bad DL class this year, it is because our guys can't recruit. There are so many other factors at play.

This recruiting class hasn't even played their final year of high school/JuCo. There will be kids that aren't on anyone's radar blow up and there will be kids who are highly touted that tank. This is just me but I'm going to wait until Feb before I begin to freak out about us missing on any particular position.

Exactly.

I mean hell, it looks like Kennion is the HS DE most likely to contribute this year, when this time last year (or whenever it was that he committed), it was all but assured he would have to red shirt. However, he wasn't that high ranked recruit.

I'm not in hysterics over anything. I'm simply countering the same arguments that keep getting thrown around as "fact", most of which I believe are gigantic stretches of reality. I can't help but roll my eyes every time Ellitor jumps in to state that Garner is "years behind" building relationships because he spends all his time "fixing our d-line".

Give it up fellows, the UGA fans were right all along.

Rodney Garner is just coasting and collecting a paycheck.
