Seriously, it’s time for the Falcons to step the frick up in the next 1-3 years. I assume that’s Ryan’s window before retirement. New coaching staff and to be honest, Brees is gone and now Brady appears to be done.

If Atlanta can’t step up and fill the void the next few seasons, a complete rebuild is inevitable and sadly, the coaching staff is doomed as well.

I have faith ATL will step up. The Braves did. UGA did (damn my Tide falling short) so now it’s on the Falcons. Arthur Blank ain’t getting any younger. I feel he’s gonna throw money to the wind like an insane person as well.

Their salary cap issues are real.

Fontenot is really gonna have to work some magic from that standpoint. FA is out of the question. They need to draft well.

Brady is done. Brees is gone.
Matt Ryan is just out of excuses.

Team game big homie.

But it is exciting to have the best QB in the division. Matt Ryan us excellent, but he's never even been the best QB in his 4 team division.

Context is important in this one... There are going to be only 4 names ahead of him at the top of the NFL passing yards chart by the end of next season, and he's played his entire career with at least one of them in the fold.

The Falcons brass had to have an inkling that the Payton/Brady thing was a ending soon, because if they can re-tool this quickly, they've got a 3-4 year division title window open with possibly 1 serious title run mixed in there.

I've been an Atlanta sports fan all my life, and I don't know if there would be a more satisfying moment of that run that would ever eclipse Matt Ryan giving all of his haters one final, 9 foot tall middle finger and winning the Super Bowl for the Birds.

This would be so glorious.

I have never doubted Matt Ryan. He is a great QB. Easily good enough to win a SB. It just so happens the franchise fing choked it away. I put that on DQ. He should have stepped in and demanded Kyle run the ficking ball.

I probably would have drafted a QB last year though if I were GM. Just because you don't draft in the top 5 often, so take a shot would have been my thinking. Ride with Matt for 2 years and then promote your pick.

I'm happy they didn't now though. Hindsight and all.

Uhhh ok. Weak take.

Matt Ryan (and I'm a fan but getting frustrated) is out of excuses. If Joe Burrow can lead a Bengal team to the Super Bowl with a shittier OLine than ATL and in his 2nd year (1st real full season), what's Ryan's excuse?
No more Brees, no more Brady, etc. Why can't he/we win the NFC South? Seriously. Just feel like all the excuses are saved for losers.

The Braves had 20 excuses to not make the playoffs. Probably 50 as to why they wouldn't win the World Series. Know what they did, fricking won it.

Anyhow, it's put up or shut up time for Ryan. He's career is in the final stages and he's got 2-3 years left in ATL no matter what. So go out and lead and just win the NFC South and go from there.

He won’t, so I wouldn’t even worry about it the next couple of seasons. This team needs to be focused on drafting trench guys from the SEC the next couple seasons more than anything.

Football is a team game, brah. Have you seen the state of both LOS's?

That's where games are won or lost.

Agreed.

I have. Have you seen the Cincinnati Bengals OLine? It's awful and yet Burrow is in the Super Bowl. That was my point.

So either a) Burrow is better than Ryan in his 2nd year of NFL football or b) Ryan needs to step up and be better to overcome his teams weaknesses.

Well, not sure about that. Burrow seems to be overcoming his shitty OLine even we he sets a record and gets sacked 9 times.

Unfortunately, that is basically irrelevant for the Falcons.

Games are won in the trenches. If you can't understand that then I can't have a conversation w/you about football.

The two most important positions in football outside of QB are your blindside T and DE(pass rush).

Um, what money exactly?

The Falcons have almost no cap space.

Sigh. Shrug. Some people are lost in the cliche phrases.
The rest of us are watching Joe Burrow in year 2 go to the super bowl. He was just sacked 9 times and set a record for the worst Oline in a playoff game.

But here you are with your tired trope “games are won in the trenches”. Cool brah.

The cap goes up in the 2022 league year and there will probably be moves to increase draft capital and free up space. For example, trading Ridley, Jarrett, and D Jones.

Man, you made some good points until this.

The real crux of the Falcons versus the Bengals is - outside of the Bengals offensive line (which is still better than Atlanta's), every other position group sans TE/K/P is WAY better.

The Bengals WR group has Chase, Higgins, Boyd, and Thomas. Russell Gage wouldn't be a top-3 receiver here, yet he's #1. The Bengals have a far better RB stable, though not as bad with CP84's emergence.

What is oft-overlooked is basically this - Matt Ryan has hardly ever had a great defense, if even good. The Bengals have at top-10 defense. The Falcons is among the worst in the NFL and has been for most of Ryan's career.

Burrow has done wonders but Matt Ryan would EASILY have the success that team is having with him at the helm. If you don't think football is an All-22 team game, my gosh go look at Matt Stafford. He never won a playoff game in Detroit (since 2009!) and he goes to a good team and in 9 months learns the offense, and is likely going to win a Super Bowl.

The Burrow/Ryan take throws your whole argument off.

If the Falcons can get some talent around Ryan, I think you'll see a drastic turnaround.

Without him at the helm last year, I am almost certain we wouldn't have won a single football game.

This dude is a bonafide HOF QB. Let's get him some help.

Trading all 3 of those guys will only give the Falcons more dead money.

They will have a lot more $$$ in '23. Not this year, though. Gotta build through the draft.

Ridley won't have any dead money whether you trade him before or after June 1st.

Grady would result in 7.33 mil of dead money. Deion would result in 10 mil of dead money if traded before June 1st and 5 mil if traded after.

Right now the Falcons will have 15 mil of dead money for 2022 from the Julio trade and will likely have more as we make roster moves.

As mentioned previously, 2023 is the year where aggressive roster improvement can begin to happen.

Someone mentioned that Arthur Blank will throw money at problems....that's not how it works in the NFL.
