Just curious why you wouldn't want a casino in central Arkansas?

The Majestic could have been saved. That's sort of part of my broader point. Casino money 15 years ago, and giving a casino/hotel developer an opportunity to renovate/restore that property could have meant Hot Springs retains an irreplaceable part of its history.
Timing, my Man, timing. 15 years ago, Hot Springs was on an downward path. It would have taken 10+ years to get back. 10 years on investment is unacceptable. Timing.

Hot Springs could have had a monopoly on casinos in the state, become a real regional draw year round, and renovated and restored more of its historic buildings in the process.
You are getting the Cella family and the city of Hot Springs confused, they are not the same now. New vision and now they are both in tune. Need each other and thats good for both.

The spots are surely already planned. My guess would be having that sucker pinned up against the new 412 bypass going north of Springdale and possibly on the west side of I-49 north of Wagon Wheel.

A casino in downtown Hot Springs would have immediately been successful. People are willing to drive to mosquito-infested soybean fields in the Mississippi Delta for casinos. In Hot Springs, with its history, and other attractions, would have seen a renaissance sooner rather than later.
I think people think of casinos and they imagine crap like the Winstar or even the Horseshoe in Shreveport. They don't have to be done that way. If Mississippi can require that all of theirs be on barges and floating, Hot Springs could have specified that they could be limited in number, size, and required that they be built only in or as part of renovation of existing historic structures.
Casinos don't have to be all neon and garbage. They can be forced to adhere to historic development norms and even contribute architecturally. A toned-down version of Blackhawk Colorado is what downtown Hot Springs should have shot for. Even Harrah's in New Orleans isn't offensive, IMO:

There are areas of Central Arkansas where an urban casino would improve the neighborhood.
The suburban/rural ones I've seen around Oklahoma are just places people drive to drink, spend the night, and act stupid for the night. Oh, and see Travis Tritt occasionally. I could see the benefit of having a place like that in Springdale by the freeway.

I agree, but like I said, its timing.
You say all of this assuming Arkansans were going to vote to approve full fledged gambling. 15 years ago, HS was hitting the bottom, and Arkansans knew it. Casinos at the time meant more decline.
The infrastructure of gov't and social opinions had to change for anything to be done. Oaklawn and Southland have slowly changed the mindset of voters by showing gambling can be scaled without bringing in instant disorder. New government allowed this to happen.
Timing

There are plenty of areas that Top rate golf courses, private airport communities, business sectors, etc that would improve neighborhoods in Central Arkansas.

Hot Springs gaming was an obvious gold mine that should have been supported.
I'd love to see the state support sports gaming, put a nice hotel/casino in downtown Hot Springs and revive the baths, do 2 seasons of racing at Oaklawn and promote the outdoor activities of the area.
We really lag on innovation and getting ahead of trends and promoting nice things in this state.

I feel the same way, I don't think it's just a Christian thing.
I voted against lottery tickets because the poorest countries ended up buying the most. Only a few casino counties that would benefit the most sounds like a good plan.

The currently being built portion of the 412 bypass (112 > I49) is firmly in Benton county. Wagon Wheel is also in Benton county.
The Boone and Miller county locations make sense, but Washington county?
The only 2 locations that remotely make any sense to me are:
- Off Elm Springs Rd.
- Eastern Springdale
I hope neither happens. NWA doesn't need a casino.

It won't pass. There are too many Tammy's from north-central Arkansas who have a facebook friend who has a grandson with a gambling problem.

I'm all for it. Yes I like to gamble
I would rather my money stay in state than over in Oklahoma.

They need to put one on the Arkansas river downtown. Make it kinda like the Lauberge in Baton Rouge. I bet it would make a killing
Posted on 8/17/16 at 7:45 pm to wmr
The Lauberge blows Harrahs away in terms of how nice they are and the people you see in them. Can't stand going to Harrahs
