Pittsburgh
Dave Wannstedt : 2005-2010
Record
2005 - 5–6 (4–3 Big East)
2006 - 6–6 (2–5 Big East)
2007 - 5–7 (3–4 Big East)
2008 - 9–4 (5–2 Big East)
2009 - 10–3 (5–2 Big East)
2010 - 8–5 (5–2 Big East)
Arkansas
Bobby Petrino : 2008-2012
Record
2008 - 5–7 (2–6 SEC)
2009 - 8–5 (3–5 SEC)
2010 - 10–3 (6–2 SEC)
2011 - 11-2 (6-2 SEC)
Bret Bielema : 2012-present
Record
2013 - 3–9 (0–8 SEC)
2014 - 7–6 (2–6 SEC)
Couple observations:
1. It's obvious JL prefers a pro-style coaching philosophy. We're not going spread as long as he's here
2. He stuck with Wannstedt through the bad seasons at Pitt, before the payoff in year 4.

I don't really think that's obvious at all.
I think it has to do with connections, availability etc.

Not really enough data imo.
Long jumped ship after 2007 anyway so you can't credit him with "keeping" a coach he didn't plan on being with the next season.
Hes 1 for 3 on coaches that have paid off during his tenure.
I think bielema needs 5 years to implement his full plan, but i could be wrong which sucks. Id give him another year if he finishes with 5 or more wins.

based upon the data we have, it's obvious.
based upon conjecture and speculation, you may be right.

I don't think this year is down the toilet at this point...yet
The team really seemed to be turning the corner IMO

complaining about bert as our coach is like a catholic complaining how shitty his wife is. nothing you can do about it. might as well try to find the little things to make you happy

catholics get divorced every day.
now if they want to get remarried in the church they'll probably have to wait a bit.

This was the fan/alumni pick for HC job at that time.
Pitt guy who had NFL experience and "success".
Long chose not to renew the contract of a HC who had a decent record in an effort to appeal to the fan base.
FWIW.

Bert ain't the problem. Pick away if you want. He didn't break all those bones.

Must be a big as curve, cause we've been "turning it" for years!!!!!!!! Always next year!!!!!!

I know it really seems that way but you have to write off John and then Brett's first year

You could be right. The problem is we gave up two easy games that were supposed to be wins, and lost a third on typical Bert-era Arkansas shenanigans. It would be different if we didn't lose all of these games on the easy portion of our schedule. We were expecting to lose @Alabama, @LSU, and @Ole Miss (at least I was expecting to lose to Ole Miss. Some here may have gotten cocky after 30-0) anyway, so if we don't beat Tennessee this Saturday, then our chances at a Bowl are essentially extinguished. And you can't say we've turned a corner until we actually win a close game and/or a road game. Do I have faith that will happen @Tennessee? No, not really. No reason to believe this game will be any different from the other nine.

Long was about to pull the trigger on this guy before the Alum stepped in.
Not sorry if I offend cat lovers

No he wasn't.
Tennessee went after Pelini, briefly, rumor got out that a SEC team was looking at a HC in the B1G title game that year, which was true, Tenner for Pelini, Auburn and Arkansas for Bert.
But hey, if you believe Long went after Pelini then you will also believe he went after Gundy, it was only after the position was filled that Tenner could no longer use Arkansas as their smoke screen.
