It has gained more and more momentum each passing week and has been the hottest topic surrounding the Razorback football program since September; will Sam Pittman return as the Arkansas head coach? According to brand new 247Sports national college football reporter Matt Zenitz, Arkansas vice chancellor and director of athletics Hunter Yurachek informed the team Saturday night that Pittman will be back in 2024.

“Our team was extremely excited last night after the game when I informed them that Coach Pittman is our head coach and will be moving forward into the 2024 season,” Yurachek stated on X early Sunday afternoon. “This has not been the season any of us anticipated. We have work to do. I am confident that together, we can meet the goals and expectations of our program. I want to thank the many Razorback fans who have supported our team this season. I look forward to honoring our seniors and cheering on this team on Friday as we take on Missouri.”

Athletic directors change their minds and do it suddenly, but that's not the type of suit Yurachek generally wears, so if he said it then it would take something really profound to change it. So what does this mean for Arkansas? What are the implications of Pittman returning, what does he need to continue doing and what has to change? Ultimately and most importantly, 'What has to happen for Arkansas to win big next season?'

Many fans are already fuming over how this season has gone, and probably nothing short of a win over Missouri and some major transfer portal moves could deter what could be a pretty toxic offseason from a fan perspective. So far, Year 4 has seen a downward trajectory that seemed to spiral out of control after Arkansas' uninspired 48-10 home loss to Auburn.

And barely getting to a bowl game in 2024 just isn't going to cut it. There will be a big indicator of where this program is headed just a month into next season with a road trip to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State and the final matchup in Arlington against a Texas A&M program that has beaten Arkansas 11 out of the last 12 meetings. A 2-2 start absolutely cannot happen next season for Pittman.

A 'FIRE ME' SCHEDULE?

Nobody has ever played a bigger 'fire me in Year 4' schedule than Pittman just did as the SEC schedule-makers sent him away from his home stadium for four consecutive games to kick off SEC play at LSU, against Texas A&M in Arlington, at Ole Miss and at Alabama, but it has been the home games that have really cost Pittman a lot of his fan support... fans who by the way love him but just want to win. It was the 38-31 home loss to BYU, the 7-3 home loss to Mississippi State and the 48-10 home pummeling at the hands of Auburn that really put Pittman's job security into question, not narrow road losses to the aforementioned teams.

By not firing Pittman, Arkansas is going to save close to $20 million dollars in buyout money and probably another $5 million or so to buy out what would have been the next coach. It would have been $16.575 million owed to Pittman along with the money that would have been owed to his coordinators and assistant coaches. And this had better not be about money as some have speculated.

BETTER NOT BE ABOUT MONEY

If Arkansas doesn't have the funds to pay Pittman and his staff buyout money that was outlined in a contract signed by the U of A brass, then Arkansas needs to leave the SEC. If Arkansas cannot compete with Mississippi schools or Missouri in NIL money, then Arkansas needs to leave the SEC. If all those people with sources who say it's a money issue are right, then this conference is a bad fit for Arkansas.

Now that Arkansas isn't shelling out two-dozen million dollars, Yurachek needs the power brokers to put their money to good use. It can't be a 'wait and see if he can get it righted in 2024.' Because if they aren't proactive, the inevitable is only being put on hold.

And for Yurachek to come out and say Pittman will return, he had better have some good assurances that the money is there for Arkansas to hire a stud offensive coordinator, for NIL money to be there to hold the recruiting class together and get some big-time additions out of the transfer portal.

BUY PLAYERS & COORDINATOR

Arkansas has to add some game-changing athletes and big men, and they are going to have to pay for them because the optics are that this is all set up to blow up in a year. For example, Jacolby Criswell might be the guy at QB next year if KJ Jefferson leaves, but Arkansas needs to land another stud, proven QB out of the portal to legitimately compete with Criswell.

Arkansas is going to have to pay a big-time coordinator so much money that it offsets any concern of his that if things don't work out then the whole staff will be fired. In addition, Arkansas has got to use the money they have in NIL to hold this recruiting class together... and let's just call it what it is... Arkansas has got to shell out big bucks to buy some players. They have to be willing to outbid programs like Auburn, Missouri, LSU and Ole Miss.

It's great getting experienced veterans in the portal, and Arkansas added some key additions last season, but Arkansas needs more guys like Drew Sanders, John Ridgeway, Trajan Jeffcoat and Landon Jackson. They need an influx of players on offense at least comparable to what came in on defense last season. It goes without saying they need to hold the defensive personnel, players and coaches, together. That could also cost money.

KEEP YOUR BEST

That's right, don't forget about the players still on this team. There are 18 of 26 seniors with the option to return for another year due to the forgiven-eligibility year of 2020. Arkansas can return 24 of what one might call 26 starters (including the deep snapper and considering that really three safeties have rotated starts pretty evenly at two spots). Even for a 4-win team, that is significant. Some of these guys will turn pro, like Raheim Sanders and potentially Landon Jackson. Jefferson might opt to move along in his career, as well.

There are 18 or so Arkansas needs back, and that isn't even taking into a account some key backups and promising younger players. It will all cost money because because the sharks are already circling. You're fooling yourself if you don't think some of these guys have already been contacted. Nobody is cracking down on tampering. Coaches have complained, but there hasn't been a single move by the NCAA to stop it.

This is an article I wrote before the Auburn game, so ignore the text at the top and scroll down where I created a three-deep depth chart for 2024 only listing players who have the option to return in 2024. It is eye-opening.

Arkansas has to trim their own fat on the current roster and replace those players with guys who can compete and beat out the players they are asking to return to the team.

So if they're not spending $25 million or so to fire their own coaches and pay the buyout of a new one, Arkansas needs to redistribute that money elsewhere and buy themselves individuals that will fight as part of a team. Otherwise, stop patronizing fans and leave this conference.

COMPARISIONS TO PITTMAN SITUATION

There are examples of coaches who bounced back after a bad year late in their career, but there are a lot more examples of ones who did not. After a 7-6 Year 3 in 2018 for Will Muschamp at South Carolina (mirroring Pittman's 7-6 Year 3 in 2022), the Gamecocks dipped to 4-8 in Year 4 (mirroring Pittman's 4-7 Year 4 in 2023). He was retained but was fired in Year 5 after a 2-5 start.

On the other side, after going 6-6 in Year 5 in 2020, Tulane coach Willie Fritz somehow survived a 2-10 campaign in Year 6. Had he been fired, the Green Wave never would have reached 12-2 the next season, nor would they be sitting at 9-1 this season.

I wrote this article before the Florida game, so again ignore the text at the top and scroll down where I break down the situations with the most recent coaching changes at each school and what it took for the AD to fire the coaches.

Now how about some comparisons of what Arkansas is willing to accept versus what other SEC programs are willing to accept. Mississippi State just fired Zach Arnett after less than one year on the job. Maybe this is a minority opinion, but it was justified. The only reason he was hired as head coach was to keep the continuity of the program following the tragic passing of former head coach Mike Leach who took the program from 4-7, to 7-6 to 8-4 the previous three seasons. Arnett instead decided to do it his own way and completely altered the offensive philosophy. They tanked because of it.

What was there for Mississippi State to salvage with Arnett? They didn't owe him much, and he had no good will built up for keeping him. For Yurachek to keep Pittman, apparently he feels there is plenty to salvage.

'Texas A&M doesn't settle for mediocrity, even if it costs them $77.6 million...' Well, they did for a while, actually. Jimbo Fisher was there six years, and they didn't win any championships the five seasons before he was fired last week. One might argue his 9-1 record in 2020 was comparable to Pittman's 9-4 season in 2021 considering the shape of the programs they inherited. Would his 8-4 2021 then not be comparable to Pittman's 7-6 2022 season? Fisher survived 5-7 in 2022 in Year 5, just like Pittman apparently is surviving 4-7 in 2023 in Year 4. But the Aggies had finally had enough after a 6-4 start in Year 6, and the truth is that will be Pittman's fate if 2024 isn't something else.

WHAT ELSE NEEDS TO HAPPEN?

Now that Pittman is apparently safe, what else needs to happen? Arkansas needs to go get former wide receiver commit, in-stater and top-100 prospect Courtney Crutchfield back in the fold. They need to get everybody to recant their crystal ball projections for in-stater defensive lineman and top-100 prospect Charleston Collins to flip from Arkansas to Ole Miss. Yurachek's assuring move needs to start that process, and then they need to make sure they are competitive from an 'NIL' standpoint.

As for Pittman, he has to get better as a head coach. Arkansas came off that Florida game feeling too good about themselves and came into the Auburn game like Hugh Freeze owed them a favor. Pittman cannot allow that to happen. Then there's more minor in-game management issues.... like not running the tush-push on 4th-and-1 until late in the season when there's not a more similar QB in the NFL than Jalen Hurts who has been doing it with the Eagles for the past two years.

There's also timeout usage. Early in the year, why would Arkansas call a timeout before punting before a fourth-and-short? It's a small detail again, but Arkansas has to run a hard-count in that situation and then either run a pre-determined play or just take a five-yard penalty and punt. No timeout needed...

This might be overlooked, but against Florida on their final fourth quarter drive, they had a first down with all three timeouts, in field goal range with a rolling 1:46 remaining on the clock. Florida only had one timeout. Why in the world did they snap the ball with 26 second left on the play clock? After Arkansas' field goal to tie the game at 33-33, Florida had 44 seconds left. It took them 36 seconds to get into field goal range.

It all worked out, which is why it might be overlooked, but had Arkansas waited to snap the ball there then maybe Florida would have had more like 20 seconds left instead of 44, which obviously made a huge difference.

MY FINAL THOUGHTS

I'm not sure what the right answer is. Some say I didn't have a hard enough take in my Walk & Talk after the FIU game, but I just convey how I feel in that moment, nothing more or less. If Arkansas comes forth with the resources, I think Pittman stands as good of a chance at turning things around next season as anybody they would hire to replace him. More than anything, it's the optics of how it looks keeping him when other programs have shown they would have made a change in Arkansas' situation. 'Is Arkansas' settling for mediocrity?'

With the way the season played out I think things spiraled for Pittman. I think the roster has more talent overall than the 4-7 record indicates, but offensive line was a major problem, and that position group cannot under any circumstances be the weakest link It effected everything they tried to do on offense. To have a mobile quarterback and surrender 42 sacks on the year is just astoundingly bad.

What the Pittman retention does ensure is that this defensive coaching staff should be back, and they should have most of the same players they have had in 2023. Invest competitively against other programs, and put a lot of it into the offensive line. Make sure you're in excellent shape at quarterback. There is no room for hoping. The first two options at QB need to be great options.

Many have pointed to the success TCU in just one year by making a coaching change, but they are an outlier who found a diamond in the rough at QB in Max Duggan who entered the season as a backup before leading the Horned Frogs to the College Football Playoffs National Championship Game. He's gone, and now TCU is 5-6. Quarterback matters more than anything, but he has to be protected, and he has to have playmakers.

Is Pittman the right guy for the job? I get fans want someone to pay for how sorry this football has been the majority of the last decade. But with the right players and an OC worth a damn, he can be the guy to get it back on track.

Is it the best idea to blow it all up if you can avoid it right before the new era of the SEC with Texas and Oklahoma joining the conference? It is if there is no hope left. Is there hope?

We'll know a lot starting Dec. 5 when the transfer portal opens.

Syracuse just fired their coach.

They are currently 5-6 and have lost 6 of 7.

Guess we can't compare ourselves to such a traditional powerhouse like the cuse.

What I don’t understand is why Hunter wants to tie himself to Pittman? You know next season is going to stink because we aren’t going to get any coaches or players worth a damn to come play or coach for a guy who’s going to get fired if the season doesn’t go right. Hunter should know this

Damn. This year had some pretty good coaching candidates we might actually be able to land too.

Next year will too, every year does. No one knew who Cignetti or Kinne were last season honestly. There are flavor of the year coaches every offseason.

this, every year or two has more incredible coaches who pull a Scott Frost more often than being the next Savior of the program.

This I am not worried about. The NIL situation/Assistant hires are my problem. But I had been figuring this was the direction we were heading a few weeks back and said so. Whelp. WPS Friends and Frickers!

“I don't think I'm getting fired, or (Yurachek) would have told me I'm getting fired,” Pittman said. “I'm not sure why I have to answer these questions about fired or not, but I think it will kill recruiting if we keep talking about it. If you're an Arkansas fan, it's going to hurt us… When we fabricate stories and put it out, it kills us in recruiting. When we give opinions about who is coming in and those type of things, it kills us. I've got a wife, and she's a human being.”

This shite is getting old. Going 1-7 in conference play is what hurts us.
