2012 football season or 2023-2024 basketball season?
Had a former poster reach out and ponder the question. I said 2012 cause I'm broken from it still and a broken heart can't get hurt like that again.
But being a basketball school 23 has been brutal.

We lost the key cog to all of the success in 2012 and there was no light to be seen in the tunnel. This year is just a bad group of players in a sport with the quickest turnaround time out of all of them.
This year sucks but 2012 was a killshot.

This basketball season by far. Beating Purdue in the exhibition and then beating Duke had us all in a froth, then reality set in. We'll always look back and wonder what happened with this one.
Petrino getting fired was awful but we all had hope that John L Smith could help but he was nothing more than a band aid on a bullet hole. Anyone could see that

And it’s not close. A better poll would have been 2012 football vs 2018 baseball.
With football we had 4 years with a lot of the players and with this basketball team we’ve had less than 6 months and besides 2 games it’s been shite.
Anyone saying otherwise has recency bias

I was on the front page of the Democrat gazette the morning after ulm. Head stuffed in my hat in disgrace. It's 2012 and the only thing even close is the dropped fly ball in Omaha.

How’s your medical situation? Any better? Anything you did to fix it?

The obvious answer is Reggie Fish

At least Purdue and Duke were highlights. I don’t remember anything that good from 2012. I guess we blew out a bad Kentucky team

April 1 2012 and its not even close.
You have to put yourself back in the mindset of early 2012. Top 5 finish to 2011, getting Kniles Davis back, Tyler Wilson returning. The stars were aligning. Latarian practically ran the Rant. We never recovered, and with NIL/portal we likely never will. Hate to be the bearer of bad news. The football program died in that ditch along the pig trail that day.
We bounced back after the baseball drop, and this basketball season can be bounced back from. Kentucky has had some terrible seasons recently and they still come back. The only way this basketball season comes close to 4/1/12 is if Muss leaves and we whiff on Beard.

Buddy called me that evening and told me what happened, the level of incredulity I experienced when it sunk in that it wasn’t an April fools joke can’t be calculated.

Muss has had his bags packed for greener pastures for a while according to many. And given the high-level of current SEC basketball coaches we don’t have time to whiff on his replacement. I don’t have confidence we can pull Beard….he has it made at OM after he fell into their laps. I wouldn’t even have the slightest idea where to begin to replace Muss though

quote:When it comes to NIL, we don't have the horses to compete. We have a couple of big-time donors, more than most other schools. But the big-time donors are not the bread and butter of NIL. The Tysons and Hunts are bigger than anyone at LSU, but LSU has tons and tons and tons of middle-of-the-pack donors. You need that VOLUME when it comes to NIL for football.

Fortunately for us, basketball and baseball are smaller sports in terms of total number of players, we can compete and win at NIL in these.
IF Muss was to leave, you have to back up the Brinks truck for Beard. Do not pass Go. There can be no swing-and-miss John Pelphrey hire.

we messed up by going after the big fish in the NIL game at the beginning without much of a organization or plan. And left out the little guys that can give 10 buck to 100 bucks a month.
I did a profit analysis/projection a few weeks ago on if just 10% of the state's population gave 10 bucks a month. 3 million a month man.
what would that do for the football program? We need the general fan involved. Grass roots efforts would make a huge difference. Just like the Ole Miss program did

So now the big fish aren't biting and we're back to fleecing the fan base.
Holy shite, I can't keep up

Still hurting pretty bad. Tried shots, steroids, and now they've got me scheduled for physical therapy starting next week

But what a terrible way to waste 36 million dollars. Ruining good athletes with bad coaches at a smooth 6 mill a win....

quote:I see where you’re coming from but that’s exactly right. It’s the nature of the beast. It’s like an nfl team complaining that they wasted millions of dollars if they have a losing season. It does truly suck but doesn’t change the fact that if your going to have a team in this league that’s what’s going to happen sometimes and doesn’t change the fact that you still have to pay to play the game year in and year out. And we aren’t the only ones. Look how much A&M has been paying per win. And they are going to keep doing it too.

quote:Now do the same analysis on Alabama and Louisiana.

Then combine that with a demographic comparison of AR vs those states, regarding high school football talent.
We just don’t have the horses - in more ways than one. Bleak AF, I know. The only hope is a coach that can coach up talent and is HOUNGRY (not like Bert, I mean like early years Petrino).

I get what you mean, but disagree that we can't compete. Louisiana, Mississippi, are poorer states with better NIL's...
More population, but Mississippi is split between 2 sec schools. We can compete in football with the right nil / coach combinations.

How many games last year did you feel like we were just absolutely less talented? Like we lost solely because they were bigger faster stronger at every position. Not games where we lost because of stupid penalties, bad time management, and poor special teams play, or generally poor execution eventually costing us?
