Yes, I have an SSD in my laptop.

I ask because when I build mine I'm thinking about using one as my boot drive and HHD for storage.

I know the boot times are really fast for SSD, but I'm not really sure how large of of a drive I should go out of pocket for since I'm only using it for the OS. Is it even worth the cost?

Without a doubt, will never own a PC without one after having one.

My laptop boots so fast, not to mention just how fast the read/write times are.

I got a 180GB one and store my OS and most used programs/games on it, and store my music/pics and stuff on a second 1TB standard HDD.

You can get a 90GB Kingston Hyper SSD for $95 and be more than set for your OS and some often used programs, games etc. They've come down a great deal in price.

Yeah, I've noticed. Good thing too because the Ivy Bridge CPU gives me a boner, at well over $300.

if you want speed run a RAID 0 setup which would require you to get 2 of the exact same hard drives. it will run about 20-25% faster than a non raid setup. the only thing is that raid is a bitch to swap hard drive shite off of, frick bitch ti's impossible, and i need the shite on my extra hard drive for business purposes or else i would have ran a RAID 0 setup

also don't skimp out on the motherboard and get you a really good cooling unit and you can overclock the processor a tad to make it faster. but if you dont' have a good cooling unit you will burn the processor.

Yeah, I've built numerous PC's, I mean, I know what I'm doing. I just have to get caught back up on some of the hardware, I'm a little out of date with some of it.

I usually don't overclock my RAM or CPU except to get the RAM out of default settings. As far as cooling, I've looked into water cooling, but I'm not comfortable setting it up, plus it's overkill for what I do. On this build I went with Arctic Cooling and it's done a great job.

not necessarily water cooling. just something bigger than the bull shite fan that the pc comes with.

get some thermal paste at best buy for 6 bucks and a 30-40 dollar fan like this

LINK

see the cheap arse fans are literally just fans.

the more expensive fans actually have exhaust systems and draw in and expand heat from the pc. tey are 10x more efficient than the BS that comes with the pc. you don't have to go water cooling to get a good cooling unit. i honestly just do the water cooling beucase it looks bad arse.

Building a computer is easy as hell. Everything these days are plug and play more or less. I haven't kept up with hardware really. Comps I fix I usually just tigerdirect a cheap part and go with it.

Main problem you have as a first time builder is paying attention to what sized memory/ram your mobo uses.

I'm building a rig.

I've got one WD velociraptor. Should I get a ssd for boot drive or get another velociraptor n raid em?

I'd raid em. it's not really all that hard to do.

the only thing though is like, right now my extra hard drive is basically hot swappable.

but what RAID does is basically make it one big hard drive. that's why they have to be identical beucse it makes it one hard drive. the thing is when you do that, you can't hot swap either of the drive (take it out and put it in another pc or just take it out and save it in general)

that's really the only drawback

lol no the real hard part is making sure you don't bend the fricking pins on the processor. when i had my computer company we lost at leat 1 processor a week to bent pins because we custom built everything ourselves.

if it doesn't automatically just fall into place do NOT put pressure on it. it should just fall into place. if ONE of those pins is gone it's a wrap jack.

also figuring out the correct motherboard jumper configuration can be a bitch if you haven't used the motherboard before. lol this brings back memories with all the raid and all the water cooling and shite i learend how to do you know what gives me the most fits? you know the towers that come with the special lighting and shite, usually by the time i figure out the jumper configuration to get all the lights to work i want to throw the pc through the window. it's never what the manual says. ever. so you end up going in and just trying out every possible fricking configuration and it's not like there's a lot of space.

oh and a time saving tip, wire the entire thing on the table before putting it into the tower. it works much easier that way. and the power supply shoudl always be the very last thing you put in or you will have hell getting to every part of the pc

I'm familiar with PC's n raids. I've got an AAS in IT and my A+. Just not sure on which way to go. I'm leaning toward the raid with the raptors with external storage for file storage in case of a drive failure

I've built 4 PC's in the past. Just been about 5 years since the last build.

I have never messed up a processor surprisingly.

Meh, never really had a problem with mobo's but I've never done a water cooled setup. I always tend to go away from them cause they are scary and new to me still.

I've done 3 acrylic case computers with the complete lighting setups the main thing I hate about fking with the lights is trying to hide all the wires and all the damn zip-ties you are forced to use.

eta: Hate these with a passion

Power supply in last is good advice. I never thought of that.
