Shows that had been scheduled for Juanita's after the closing date will instead be held at the Clear Channel Metroplex in Little Rock.
Juanita's, currently located at 614 President Clinton Ave., first opened in 1986 on South Main Street. The business was listed for sale in 2012 and again in July.
What was the decisions made that many did not agree with?

the new building was total garbage as far as a showroom. The Main St location was pretty much the best place to see music, great sound, good bar, and solid bookings.
since the move, no one goes to juanitas anymore. theyve also brought in fewer and fewer shows worth seeing. i know theyve brought in some real shite, past-their prime acts (aging hair metal dudes) that im sure required huge guarantees and i see no way juanitas was making any money on those shows.
the only time ive seen them full the past year was when i drunkenly stumbled in there on some salsa-dancing night. felt like i was in south america. it was kinda awesome. but anyway, juanitas went to shite.

When did Juanita's move? I only ever went there when it was where downtown met teh ghetto. The danger was part of the appeal.
Strange that gentrification is in full swing now, anybody would abandon that location. It's prime real estate.

I think the decisions they are talking about was the decision to move out of the old building. It was so much better, and right after a show you could just walk on down to midtown.

Midtown and their cheeseburgers.... Drunken cheeseburgers.
I'm ashamed to admit that I peed on Community Bakery's stoop more than once.

the last time I went to juanita's you was right down in the ghetto. across the street there was a slE-Z mart where this black crack head would heckle me for change and tell me about how he plays rhythm and blues (when I know good and well this dude behind his devil dick red eyes don't even own a house, let alone a guitar, or a lighter to smoke his crack/meth) I told him I had no money and his music sucked.
I don't know if that was the old spot or not but it was a good memory.

I loved community bakery. Is it still open?

I didn't realize they moved either- same things y'all said about midtown (had a friend get stabbed there one night- I wasn't there that night) and their cheeseburgers.
Sort of on subject, anyone else go to a work Christmas party last night and drink way way way way too much? Turns out I was loving not mean drunk so that part is good, now to text everyone and apologize for being a fool. Oh life...

heard that juanitas was always getting jerked around on the lease, and either they had enough of it or were forced out. the Oxford American took over the lease, moved into the offices upstairs, then secured a grant to open South on Main in the old juanitas. they have shows, readings, all kinds of stuff other than being a pretty nice restaurant.
the whole area down there is way different, really in just the past five years. some cool places to eat, boutiques and antique shops, Bernice Gardens, community bakery still there. boulevard has their bakery in the area. great place to spend a few hrs on a saturday afternoon, but still sketch at night.

It's all about the festies now.
You get way more bang for your buck for a weekend of camping out and doing psychedelics than. Paying to see a couple bands for $20-50 bucks for a ticket and pounding $7 jack and cokes or $4 long necks. Then having to deal with driving home and dodging DWI's.
The market is evolving

Guess that was a long time ago, cause SOMA is not ghetto

Compared to the rest of LR, which doesn't mean it still wasn't...
Juanitas deal on their shows was they never had anything worth seeing on the weekends, meaning the type of shows they were successful at in the late 90s early 2000s, mainly the up and coming artists were being booked on mid week nights which is trouble some for people with jobs and stuff.
During my college years the bands coming in were a lot like the Razorbacks, you could see them at Daves, etc then if you really like them and they were worth the effort you could make the journey and take the risks of stabbings and shootings to watch them perform again the next night at Juanitas, this played out several times with several bands and vice versa.

I used to live downtown. 13th & Main was ghetto-adjacent at best. Hell, downtown close to 630 was pretty ghetto. I haven't been there since SOMA opened, so it has been a few years. That block was the last decent area before the start of hardcore ghetto in the early 2000s.

Sounds like Juanita's in the early 90's. That was the last time I went regularly and there was always a guy who matches your description there. I loved that guy.
South Main isn't ghetto. I've seen rural trailer parks that were much worse.

this probably would have been aound 05-07 somewhere in that time frame. there was an EZ mart across the street with a wooden fence that separated the sleazy Mart parking lot, from what would just be considered a large open parking lot right across the street from juanita's. the dude across the street kept asking me for change claiming he wanted to buy food(which I guess meth does about the same thing as food once ingested, you become not hungry) I was young and remember my pocket rattling with change as I lied and said I had no charge, as I then went inside and bought a drink and maybe a lighter lol. not sure what happened to that guy but I'm sure his musical career took off and he is doing a finale show at juanita's now.
