There's only 5 Arkansas girls on the roster.

Fast pitch wasn't sanctioned in the state until the mid-1990's so we're far behind other states.

The BFF features a softball game and on the same day the Arkansas softball team got no-hit.

The BFF could do something to improve the level of competition of softball in Arkansas but that doesn't serve the needs if the dbags that support that retarded festival.

Another retard that loves softball when it comes to rec leagues is Wally Hall but what is he doing to improve competition and participation and furthering the athletic careers of Arkansas girls?

It appears that recruiting athletes from out of state isn't working. Maybe building from the inside out is the answer? Had a gf back in the day that was an all-state pitcher at a big school level and she never got a look from the Hogs. She had a decent career at another state school.

Would building the team from the best players around the state actually create some interest in the team? There's been little interest from the hog fanbase in softball unlike the gymnastics or volleyball squads.

Instead of only having a handful of girls on the team, loading the roster w/ local girls could only be a good thing. Get fans from Paragould. Ft. Smith. Benton, El Dorado, Monticello. Bergman, Clinton, West Memphis et. Etc excited about softball and more importantly give thousands of girls around the state a dream of playing for the Hogs.

What they've been doing isn't working. It's time for a new approach.

1. Leave this thread.

2. Never think about Razorback softball again.

damnit that's exactly the attitude that has led to the abismal state of Lady Back softball.

That team will also get its arse beat by the top tier SEC schools. They need to work to improve the quality of softball instate while recruiting at a higher level out of state. Not an easy task in a state that doesn't care about softball and coming off a 2-40+ conference record over the past two years.

Sure. If you have some ideas for how to do that I bet athletics would be all ears

Lol

Chesh, you pull a Houston Nutt in softball and it will get worse. Give in state kids offers just because they're in state kids and this years 17-39 record looks golden compared to what would happen.

Maybe I'm just in a different locale but it seems like buttloads of girls play. I know definitely of one that's a cousin of mine in high school that went to some auburn camp heck it may have been a recruiting trip for all I know (do they do that?) last summer. In a nutshell, it really surprises me we don't have any softball talent in the state.

I don't think the coaching and program support is really there on the level it should be, Pigg. A lot of girls play back home and some are good, but overall it comes back to that IMO.

I played (not in college ) and still play rec and I have a softball kid. The sport means a lot to me, but I just don't associate it at all anymore with programs back home. Only a few of my friends have kids in decent programs/coaching and of those very few stick it out all the way, through.

Bringing on just in state kids would be a disaster. Of course, there really is no where to go but up.

i think that must be it- just put a little focus on it and i think we'd be fine. and i agree, we'd need to recruit out of state too but i'm still surprised we don't have many good in state players.

i played too- of course i'm old and it was slow pitch- but i was pretty damn good if i do say so myself and think i would have prob been pretty good at the other too had i gotten the chance. i would have cut off a toe at the chance to play for the hogs myself but i'm weird that way.

A gf of my son's was all-state pitcher for 3 years, Wendy's softball player of the year, etc. Wanted to be a hog. Said on her official visit, the coach acted like he didn't even know or care she was visiting. This is the previous coach, not the current one. Full ride out of state.

I believe it.

I never said we should only bring on in-state players, but we should build a base with them. They always say the best Hog football teama were those that had a base of in-state players and homegrown linemen.

Maybe the same would happen in softball.

A walk-on program is where I'd start. Have a buddy whose daughter is beasting out this year. She's carrying the school to the State tourney. 10K's a game isn't uncommon for her, she's good at the plate too. Being from a small school she's not a killer athlete but she's smart and plays heady and is a great kid, that's the kind of kid Arkansas coaches should be targeting and working to get them on campus as a walk-on in the very least.

As a former fast-pitch coach in the state, I can say that more and more schools are placing an emphasis on good coaching in their softball programs. The days of a football coach just sitting on a bucket are coming to an end. As more and more girls get opportunities to play in college (especially D2), there is a greater pool of coaches that coach when their playing days are over. Even at the small school levels, I have seen more schools invest in their programs by giving these former players opportunities to coach.

I have had the good fortune to coach in two AHSCA all star games, and the quality of coaches that I was able to work with was outstanding. Softball is making huge strides within our state. As it grows, so will the chances that we see more and more instate kids playing for the U of A. That being said, we aren't there yet. As many have mentioned, we have to step up our recruiting game in some of these softball hot beds. I've been impressed with our new coach. I expect our results to continue to improve.

More and more Farmington kids are getting out there and coaching. Only a good thing for the state.

I don't think in-state views it the same. My daughter (turns 14 next month) PRACTICES 15 - 20 hours a week on top of tournaments while maintaining a 4.0. All that, and she's one of the three catchers on the team doing the same thing.

All that, and all she wants to do is play High School - not college. She doesn't want to play college because she wants to be a Dr, and the sport would take too much of her time.

I don't think Arkansas has quite caught up with how some of the other schools view the sport.

I like her mindset. Sports are recreation.
