Do you consider Kentucky to be a bad program?

No. The exact opposite actually. Most years they are also above .500 on the road.

So you would be OK with it if more home games were being lost?

The other guy earlier in the thread was right. If the team wins two or three more away games, which is not asking the world we are more than likely in the tourny.

Who said it was an excuse, its a simple question, if winning on the road was easy, several teams would have finished at or above .500 in the same time span.

Nobody says it is a cake walk. However, it is not as difficult as the team makes it look. They don't just lose on the road. They play like the monstars took their talent.

I don't think that was his claim. He simply said winning 18% of our road games is abysmal, and it is. 50% or better is nothing but a pipe dream, and not just for us. However, winning 25-30% would be within reason.

Yes, this. Thank you.

Just checked, sitting at 33% this year, should be 66% if not for a mental meltdown by player.

So, Mike inheriting a depleted talent roster is used against him, because well, statistics.

Last I checked, Bert has yet to win a road game, its been two years, whats the fricking problem.

You sure about that?

Like, really sure, that most years under Cal Kentucky has been above .500 on the road?

Seriously? You're going to use this year as a metric, before we even start conference play? 33% would be fine if it continues, but we don't know that it will.

I've already stated that the road problems aren't just a MA problem.

Our bad road record mostly reflects mike's first two years. The last two seasons we've played much better on the road.

Just as we do not know that it will not.

I do not see where taking over Pel's sunbelt squad has any bearing on this year.

But stats.

More of a general statement, look back at the major gripes of previous head coaches:

Heath - could not win in the tourney

Pel - didn't get enough time to get his guys and program in place

Mike - can't win on the road.

It is weird that losing constantly on the road was never a problem for the previous two HCs.

No, it was a pretty specific statement. Also, another's gripe(s) about any previous coach are not necessarily mine.

Yes. MA has 6 road wins. Auburn 2011, Auburn 2012, Vandy, UK, MSU 2013, and SMU 2014.

Combining road and neutral court games (including SEC tourney) we have a win percentage of 21%. Neutral court wins over Alabama A&M, Minnesota, South Alabama. We should get another neutral court win next Saturday in NLR. If that ever gets over 30% and approaches 35%+ which shouldn't be out of question we would be in the NCAA last couple years.

quote:

We haven't had a winning road % since the 94-95 season, so it isn't just MA. It's that at home we set the pace, and on the road we let our opponent set the pace - that's the difference. Well, outside of the mindset of the players going into a road game, it's like they concede before the game starts.

Agree it's the style of play. We are a one trick pony and when the press doesn't force turnovers and speed up the game on the road. It allows open shots to be made that aren't at Bud Walton. The tiring out the opponent doesn't work when we go up against a good guard that can handle the ball.

Mike needs elite guards for his system to win on the road. This is year 4 and we've yet to have any pro type guards recruited.

Glad to see us rebound. That being said, I want to see us go on the road and smoke a decent team. Then I'll be convinced we might make some kind of tourney run.

I'm a pretty big fan of MA. I know Manny Watkins and his father pretty well, and I'm big fans of them, too. I wish nothing but the best for all of them. Right now, though, we're getting exactly what Mizzou fans said we were going to get.

Bielema didn't get an Auburn like opponent road game his first two years in the SEC like Mike did against Barbee.

In true road games they are above .500 with their worst year being equal to our best. I don't know what their neutral win % is. I imagine that it is more of the same.

Don't have time to read everyone's comments, but after watching the Mavs get blown out by Golden State, I was really excited to watch the Hogs.

Midget championship bullshite on ESPN means I missed the first 10 minutes of play through the DVR. But what I did see brought back some of the early season optimism I had. They looked much more focused, the offense was crisper, found ways to get Portis more looks, etc. I was really happy to see better help defense in the half court.

From the point I started watching, it seemed like Beard had taken the starting PG role. He just seemed to have control of the floor while he was in. Love what I see out of him. He's actually a tough guard, which is something I felt we've been missing.

I only got to listen to most of the 1st half on the radio, on the road to a rehearsal. Don't even know what the final score was, but sounded like we were playing great in the 1st...

I am still concerned about road woes also. We did go to SMU and win, that was very encouraging. However, it's not that we lost to Iowa St that bothered me so much, it's HOW we lost. We got our butts thoroughly kicked. Don't know if it was a hangover from that, but we should have beaten Clemson, if we are what we expected this team to be.

We beat a fairly highly thought of Dayton team at home, but I wonder if we would have beaten them on the road?

If we are going to go more than a game or two in the tournament, we've got some improving to do when we play away from home.

Maybe. But it's not like the committee factors in things like "might have lost to this team if they played them on the road."

And because of that, we saw changes to the lineup most everyone thought was needed.

Its time to let that game go. Itll be a minor footnote in feb/mar.

I was impressed by the difference in the team and in the play of our guards. We do need to carry that onto the road with us if we want a shot at the Big Dance but it was a very nice step in the right direction.
