You realize that Arkansas residents are spending this money anyway (whether casino is in OK, MS, or here)? So why not keep that money in-state?

I Ham That I Ham, that is a simple question I asked on page one that no detractor will answer.

Oklahoma casinos, in an article I referenced from the beginning, states 60% of revenue comes from Arkansas residents via Fort Smith and NWA.

I understand this, as I said it in my second post in this thread.

I'm just not sure the money the 'games of skill' would bring to the state would outweigh the shitty environment that they would breed. Like I said in that earlier post, Vegas is fun, but I wouldn't want to live and raise a family there.

Yep, I believe it. I went to Choctaw a week or two ago to see the Joe Nichols concert and have been a couple other times. Every time I have been I have seen tons of Hog gear. I have seen some prominent NWA people and even a pretty famous actor there. These posters that make not so subtle jabs at the people at casinos should get off their high horses. It looks like the same crowd that you'd see at a Bass Pro

I love statements like this that are intended to prove a point to people that don't even make that $2,300 a month to begin with.

Do you want me to change it to 500,000 instead? It's an arbitrary number yet usually people strive to have a million dollars in retirement.

It's now $1,129.71.

Luckily the state lines act as an invisible force field that blocks all the undesirable elements of those tables and slots that are 100 yds from Arkansas.

Well it does seem to be more centrally located to wherever the games of skill are located, so...

I'm not one to really get too far in the gambling debate because I can take it or leave it and have done a little of it myself but not that much, but I've never understood the argument that you should do "x" because that is what your neighbors are doing.

By the same logic if one of our neighbor states decriminalizes drugs or prostitution and therefore allows Arkansas residents to cross the borders to purchase these items and services does that mean Arkansas, from an economic standpoint, should follow suit? I just think there's a bit more to it than that.

agreed! THOSE DANG REPUBLICANS

It is simple really. You either believe that everything you get in financial resources are either yours, and yours alone. Regardless of how they are derived.(Occupation/Career, Social Security/Disability) and you should do as you wish with these funds, regardless of the outcome. Here is my problem with it in a nutshell. If you get funding from the government to pay for your bills, your food, your medical care and yet the casinos target those funds by offering a free meal, 20.00 in free play, and a free ride to Biloxi MS. Do you not see a problem here? Really?

For me, not a problem. If I wanted to spend a grand in a casino, I could and still have health care, food, home, cars, and a nice vacation to the beach, and of course tix to the hog games. but for the less fortunate, why should we allow our state, and other greedy bastards to prey on these people to litter their own pockets on a daily basis. Tax their earnings 50% and give it back to those ignorant folks I suppose.

Nahhh... Lets all EAT THE RICH!

Exactly. Which, guess what? ........Represents the average American. Oh, the horror.

No one is putting a casino in posh neighborhoods because the land is too expensive. Furthermore, nice or posh neighborhoods are hardly ever the epic center of population in a city or region which casinos desire.

people that are adamantly pro casino seem to see nothing but the almighty dollar. "look at all that money we're passing up on that's going elsewhere!!!1!1"

you frickers do realize money doesn't fix everything, right?

Right. Neither does making something legal or illegal. Money is a medium of exchange that can be abused like almost anything else. So can law yet just because some laws aren't necessarily fair to some people, does that mean we get rid of all laws? Do we get rid of money because some spend it unwisely or rid ourselves of consumables on which it can be unwisely spent?

And RR, did not Jesus himself preach something to the effect of "living in the world but not of the world"? ...or something like that? When he overturned the tables in the temple, wasn't he referring to it not being done in "his house"? But anyway...I think he meant for us to take responsibility for our own houses in the physical and spiritual sense without trying to control the masses. And I don't think he was necessarily against the medium for exchange but was making a point in reference to the abuses and spiritual bondage which can occur without our spiritual awareness and vigilance.

...and I think Jesus was very pissed.

Obviously, I'm not a preacher but I respect your opinion whether I agree with it or not.

I wish I could find the stats I used in 1987 in a study I did for a grad course.

I know it is very outdated, however the premise was this.

It showed by numbers that the amount of money raised in the state did not cover the amount of the raise in the rate of crime, foreclosures, and burden on social services over a period of time. That the rate of financial increases of these items along with the needed manpower of legal fees was actually more than the states cut of the gambling offered. I believe it was 10 years and I can not remember which state. I will try to find it. However, this is just the financial aspect that so many are enamored with.

I tend to believe that Arkansas would be better served in building the infrastructure and promotion of our natural resources to the outsider to come visit, bring their industry, and retire/move/vacation here. Our promotions of our great state is atrocious at best. JMHO of course.

Porky, you are exactly right. And Jesus even turned water into real wine.. GASP!!!

And I bet he didn't leave the party once the wedding festivities continued, do you?

Again, the aspect of wanting what is best for his/her neighbor, friends, society, state, nation with regards to not taking from, but adding too in a positive way is what I hope for, live for, and attain for. and Often fall short of.

I have no problem with a game of blackjack, as long as it is not abused. but the government getting involved to make money from gambling only to use the money to help those who have a gambling problem caused by the government resources in the first place. Nuts...

Again, I prefer helping our state overcome in better ways. Again, can you imagine the great things that could have been accomplished by Daly's gambling losses in Arkansas? I could go on and on, but wont for the sake of watching the Olympics.

BTW, Love the Dog... Awesome!

Why not all the above?

You want to drastically reduce poverty improve education, period. (Government standpoint) "However, we cannot let them get too smart or they might see behind the curtain." Thank the lord for the internet to circumvent the education bubble and fallacy.

Google with 800 students in an on-line classroom is coming if not hindered by corrupt bureaucracy.

Well, I could too but thanks for reminding me. I'm going to watch the Olympics tonight as well. SH really opened the gate for discussion with this topic and I hope we can all do that without losing sight of the fact that we're all here for a similar reason. We all have our faults and strengths and we all (well, most of us) love those Hogs.

Who is making fun of people that go to Bass Pro? Cabela's is next to the Promenade in Rogers for crying out loud. He was referencing the Average Arkansan and I agreed with him and you should too.

I could spend all day talking to some redneck in Cabela's then walk over and chit chat with some posh Breitling dealer.
