Please answer some questions for us.

I have Direct at this time, have been with them for 5 years. The costs is ridiculous.

I know I can call and get a discount, etc. Or move to Dish, however I would love to understand more about Sling/Digital Antenna and Netflix.

1. Can I watch all of the SEC Games, Cowboys games, Cardinal games with Sling?
2. If the internet is down, I suppose so is the ability to watch games?
3. Does Netflix have Disney shows for my young ones.
4. Does a nice digital antenna get the local channels in HD, Range? etc.
5. How much should one expect to pay to get set up and monthly? thanks for any help you can give... WPS!

I dropped Dish a few months ago, just not worth approximately $1200/year.

I have Netflix, lots of good stuff to watch on there - however, don't expect to see current stuff on there very soon. I haven't checked Disney, but there's probably a lot of good stuff for kids to watch.

Sling - $20 for the basic package plus $5 for the ESPN/SECNetwork 'tier'. It is internet based so yes, if the internet is down, so is your Sling. It's dependent on having decent speed as well. If you want to watch on your TV you will need a Roku or another approved box.

'Free' TV. Digital signal reception is either 'on' or 'off', and yes - if it is being broadcast in HD, you will receive in HD. Things like Grit TV (7.3), Laramie, Chuck Norris movies etc. weren't in HD to begin with so no. Some digital antennas (mostly outdoor models) claim reception up to 75 miles, indoor models up to 60, of course these are the upper end models of antennas. My antenna was $60 bucks (indoor) and I get channels 4.1, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 11.1, 11.2, 16.1, 38.1, 42.1, and 42.2. Could pick up a few more with a better antenna probably. I am probably 40/45 miles or so from the transmitters.

Sling is live TV with no DVR. So if you aren't watching live, no. Also there is no Sunday Ticket for sling that I know of

Yeah but how long is your internet down for?

Don't think so but not sure

Depends where you live

Sling plays thru Roku or FireStick. These are <$50. Monthly for sling is $25, with $5 more for all ESPNs adder

I have watched less TV by far with sling and I'm happy with that. You don't realize how much crap you watch that you can live without and you don't miss it, trust me. Instead I have hung out outside, read books and newspapers, taken a Great Course, etc

If you prepay 3 months of Sling, they will give you the Roku stick version 'free', or half off a Roku 3.

I haven't missed Dish at all, the only time I could possibly miss it would be football season, and I think I will be okay with Sling and the free CBS / ABC games. If something goes wrong, I can always go watch at my son's house, lol.

The first big question for you though is: How fast is my internet connection? The higher the better of course, but it may not work very well at less than 3mbps. 6mpbs or greater would be better of course.

10mbps should be good to go.
After a while, you may wonder why you didn't do this earlier.

Your monthly TV expenses will drop to < $50.

Of course, if you try it and don't like it, DTV is going to offering you all kinds of incentives to come back.

Not possible to get a DVR yet. You can also only watch one screen per sling account at once

You can always just go full pirate mode and stream all the games/tv shows for free... Not that I am promoting that route...

I've purchased a outdoor digital antenna with 360 degrees motorized positioning, supposedly the range is 150 miles, we'll see. The 50 mile indoor antenna will only pick up two channels in this building (workshop/man cave) with metal walls/frame/roof.

If the digital antenna works, that will take care of CBS games on Saturday/NFL games.

Then I will work on amplifying the wifi to set up an old lap top in there for streaming to take care of the rest.

Once that is taken care of a few 52+ flat screens will be mounted on the walls (4 walls means 4 screens needed amirite?). As well as addressing the sound system, the antenna I bought for the tv is also suppose to pick up AM/FM, we'll see.

I don't have sling, but I did pull the plug a year and half ago. I went out and got a Roku 3. There are many ways to go to get what you want. It does suck time to time but it's worth saving the cash.

*I pay for Netflix and Hulu +
*On Roku, I use the ESPN App (requires password but my grandma hooked us up)
Also with Netflix it has TONS of kids shows and movies. Roku also has Disney Apps (which uses the same Dish Password) Plus all other stations Apps such as History, A&E, etc.
*I also stream from Movietube.so (movies) and Couchtuner.eu (up to date TV series including Premium Channels) ***if I'm not supposed to link that please let me know ill remove.
*Local channels obtained by a HD Antenna

How I stream is by using my IPhone; I went to best buy got a HDMI IPhone adapter. Works perfect you can also use a computer.

If you can't find someone to give you a Dish Password, let me know and I can hook you up with the one I use.

I read somewhere that netflix is signing a contract with Disney/Pixar. Might be worth googling.

Nevermind, the deal was inked long ago just no new movies till 2016.

I had mentioned it in the other thread, but the fact that we have multiple tv's (4, but might go down to 3) made cutting the cord pretty much senseless. We can't put outside antenna's on our homes in my neighborhood, either. So, basically we would have one tv that a teenager, 7 yr old and two adults would all be fighting over unless we created set ups in all rooms, only to risk shitty reception with an interior antenna. I love FIOS overall, so it's just something I've come to accept as an expense comparable to any other utility.

It's not worth it Rev.

I've got Dish and pay $61/month for 3 rooms and 2 DVRs. I've also got Apple TV for my outdoor TV. Each TV has wifi so I have Netflix and Amazon Prime.

By the time you spend all the money to jazz up each room in your home, you'll probably wish you hadn't cut the cord with Dish/Directv

I'll also add this thought...If cutting your Directv rooms to one or two helps your bill, then do that.

I bought my Apple TV for $69. It has a watch ESPN app, Disney Jr app, Disney app, Netflix, etc. so you could eliminate a room from Directv if it saves you money and put Apple TV in a kids room, man cave, etc.

The thing with Apple TV, you have to already subscribe to a provider that has said channels in order to use them.

If I could keep direct at 61.00 a month, I would... It is more than double that for a medium package, with sports pk..

I have Netflix and Amazon Prime (mainly for free shipping, but the streaming is an added bonus and ability for free downloads to the kid's tablets for road trips is also big).

I also run Kodi (formerly XBMC) on a GBox Midnight (may switch to a rooted Amazon Fire in the near future). I won't go into what all that involves, but suffice to say I can watch what I want. It's not for the non technically savvy folks out there, but it's a pretty fantastic tool.

You may be better just making a simple switch to Dish and taking advantage of the one or two year special rates.

I have Dish, and what I like is I can log in online and change my channel line up at anytime and then see the toll it takes on the monthly bill. Now, I don't need any of the HBO's or movie packages. I just have normal channels and Sports pack that has NFL network, MLB, Fox Sports, etc.
