Could someone tell me how exactly the U of A's finances are looking?

I'm still not against Bert getting a fifth year, and he's going to get it anyway, so why not. But if he absolutely tanks the 2017 season, what are the chances of Arkansas paying that 7.9 million buyout and opening up the book for someone else? We got off free when we fired Petrino (if you could call that a winning situation), and I kind of feel like if Tennessee can be paying off more than one coach at a time, we could do it, too. However, I'm completely ignorant to this matter and maybe someone could enlighten me.

I can only think of two guys off the top of my head who I feel could get it done here for sure. Jim Tressel, who's show-cause runs out at the end of this year, and Chip Kelly, who is most certainly eventually going to be fired by the 49ers. I'm sure Long would not go after Tressel, but more than likely he'll be snatched up by a school like Texas or LSU before we could get the chance to, anyway. It's going to be great timing for that guy to become available again with LSU looking for a coach, and Texas, USC, and Notre Dame on the verge. Even Oklahoma/Stoops aren't in situation much different than Georgia/Richt.

But unless Chip Kelly explicitly desires to go back to Oregon, I don't see why Long would miss this opportunity. If he cared at all about saving Arkansas football, he would pursue Chip Kelly. The guy is basically Petrino without the scumbag baggage. I'm afraid if we miss out on Kelly when he goes back on the market, that's basically the death rattle for Hog football for a decade.

I really want one of those two coaches at Arkansas. Are we not eventually going to have to spend some money to make some money and open the checkbook? Is there ANY chance at all of this happening? This isn't some Gruden situation. Money issues aside, these guys would be very realistic shots, very soon.

I believe it's more the Razorback Foundation finances over the U of A's finances. There would be a shite storm if public funds were used to buy out a football coach. That was one of the issues LSU ran into last year. They're a mess financially as a state but the lack of understanding where buyout funds come from helped Miles make it to this year.

I doubt they want to dip into a huge chunk of their funds when they're trying to raise money for a stadium expansion. I like Bielema and think he can get it done, so I'm not ready to see him go yet. Rob Smith can get his arse on the next flight out of XNA though.

Chip Kelly would be amazing, but Oregon will likely need a new coach after this year. If he's done in the NFL that would be a logical step for him. Tressel has been out of the game for so long I'm not sure he'd be an upgrade. Who knows though. With the buyout being what it is this is all likely hyperbole anyway.

Are you suggesting Chad Morris would be a good candidate or something?

I think you're right in that Kelly will probably just go back to Oregon. It's going to work out perfectly for them. Helfrich will quit or go back to being the OC and they won't miss a step. And I highly disagree about Tressel, he likely wants to coach again and will probably be really good. One of the aforementioned teams is destined to get him, if he decides to come back.

Can we afford to fire Bert? Sure we can. We could fire him tomorrow and swing it, though it would sting like hell to fire him and the staff all at once right now.

Who do we get to replace him though? There is a decent chance Texas, Oregon, and LSU are going to be in the market for big name coaches. If Kelly comes back to college we might be able to pay him as well as those places but its easier to win there. Tressel has been out of football forever and a day and he's not exactly a spring chicken anymore.

Most of the can't miss prospects out there are going to be gone after this year with the big name jobs finally coming open. If we get someone with a radically different offensive scheme are we willing to wait the two or three years for them to get their players in place?

Lets slow our roll here.

You said not going after Kelly would be the "death knell of Hog football for a decade"(not sure if you were being serious with that)

Just saying there are other good, more realistic coaches out there.

I also think I'm done wanting a pro-style coach. We should just hitch our wagon to the spread like everyone else.

edit: Mike Macintyre is also interesting

No, I don't think Hog football would be given a death sentence for real if we missed those two, but I really don't think either of them could fail here. Maybe Chad Morris would be good with resources a little better than SMU, but Bert's struggle this year has forced us to take a good hard look at ourselves, what we've become, and what we want to be in the future. I don't see the point in setting ourselves back with another (edit, said "another", but I didn't mean to imply we have one right at now) risky up-and-comer hire if another Petrino-level guy might be coming available.

I'm coming to terms with Bielema probably not being our answer. It would be a lot easier if I was wrong, but I think we'll have a better answer by the end of next season. I'm just kind of afraid that all he's going to be is our Dan Mullen. I don't want Dan Mullen. We've had better and could have better again.
