Very interesting article about how athletic directors spend like drunken sailors and how poorly run many athletic departments are. Goes in very great depth about Auburn and Rutgers. Man, Jay Jacobs is an imbecile and Rutgers is just hopelessly adrift in an ocean far too big. The chart that shows every power 5 public University's profit/loss is at the very end of the article.

That was a beautiful dismantling of Auburn athletics yet not once mentioning the Cam Newton Costs.

The accounting on these always amuses me.

If there is significant excess money and they don't need to rebuild reserves.. it will ALWAYS be used up almost completely in some type of capital expenditure.

So I'm guessing the north end zone project won't be taking place any time soon...

Oh just you think.

That baby is trucking right along. The $ will come and the $ will go.

Jeffy just needs a couple good 9 and 10 win seasons to get the checks rolling in.

Is this just Athletic Dept money and not the foundation?

probably. and as a public university, they shouldn't be maintaining profits. it's all accounting tricks.

Yes. It doesn't do an athletic department any good to show a significant profit year to year. Spend what you have and start over every year.

Foundation money is what matters.

that's what i thought- you try to get basically back to zero don't you so your budget doesn't get screwed up going forward.

It would be asinine to build it (not to mention fiscally irresponsible) until there is some indication of demand. 'Build it and they will come' isn't necessarily true.

I believe there is indication of demand which is why they are going to build it within the next few years. Those chair back seats/boxes will be drastically easier to sell than those terrible corner upper deck seats.

It's hard to see it in the stands from the games I've seen.
Plus, ticket prices/foundation donation requirements have reached the point of diminishing returns. Especially now that you can watch every game from your recliner, with replay, with a better view and go fix a sandwich/grab a beer/take a whiz during those insufferable (in the stadium) TV timeouts.

There will always be those who prefer to go to the game, but in my opinion, I don't think it's going to grow much.

JMHO. Your mileage may vary.

Truth. If the university were more centrally located, it would help. It's just impossible for us to go to games and get our kids to all their functions. I think a smaller stadium with more bells and whistles that stays full is better. Expand only when supply is in great shortage. A full stadium looks a shot tom better than even 85% full, even if total spectator numbers are higher. I think they should focus on making game day and event even more so than it is. And don't schedule such shitty out of conference games. I'm good w LA Tech, ULM. At least get teams w a little name recognition, and that will bring fans of their own.
