Ozark Highland Trail

I'm thinking about doing this and the John Muir

Who's done it? Was it worth it?

Mind telling me more? What time of year? Would you do it again at that time of year or pick another? Which end did you start at? Would you do it that fast again or would you slow it down?
What other long hikes have you done?

I have walked part of the trail but nowhere near all of it. I would advise spring or early fall to hike it. The foliage turning is gorgeous but it can get fairly cold in the hill country so bring the right gear. Hiking is fairly popular up here so you'll run into other hikers on the trail to keep you company.

While not as hot as most of the South the Ozarks get plenty warm during the summer and things have a nasty tendency to turn brown. In the winter its often damp and chilly, and once again things have a nasty tendency to turn brown. The scenery is gorgeous up here so make sure you catch it at a time of year when it is at its best.

I hiked a section in the richland wilderness area. We were scouting a creek though so we didn't exactly stay married to the path. It looks like a fun hike I wanted to do it this year at some point.

Go either now basically or wait till early fall. Summer and Winter hiking out there would be really rough as it'll either be super hot or super cold and it's pretty remote out there.

You need to already be on it, summer is not e time to do it. Although I see no problem with going in winter? Our winters are pretty weak here.

Yeah. Anytime but summer. Winter isn't bad, and leaf off will actually offer you some nice views that you don't get in the other seasons.

Summer is just... ugh. Bugs are insane. Hot as hell in a tent at night. Poison ivy like crazy. Mosquitos. Humid. Did I mention hot? Especially at night. In a tent.

When I was younger I used to plow ahead in the summer with my camping and it didn't bother me. Now... if I'm outside in the summer, I'm on a body of water.

I think it would be nice right now, but by the time you're finished in June it will be hot and humid. Looks like there are several good swimming holes up there, though.

Summer excursions in the Ozarks are best on the lakes and rivers.

I've done it.

Best time is in the fall hands down. Late SEP/October. My Favorite section is 23 to hare mountain. It's absolutely gorgeous when the trees are changing. I've done NUMEROUS bro trips and I've also done lots of hiking on the Muir and PRT in California.

If you're doing anything in the summer, do the BRT so you're near the water. But I'd advise against this as the bugs, poison ivy and heat are pretty baffling.

I'm jealous

Have you done the Ozark Trail in Missouri?

What about ticks in the fall on the OHT?

Not yet, All my gear is still out in California. It's on my list.

Ticks usually aren't too bad towards OCT/NOV. You'll def get them in late SEP and it can still be pretty hot.

Late Oct/Nov is pretty much money season. It usually doesn't get that cold in November. The last few thanksgivings in NWA have been pretty balmy honestly.

I have been to the Ozarks on the Missouri side and it was the most beautiful place I have seen in the red part of the US.

Sounds like a fun trip Sarge.

Get 2 flea and tick dog collars and tighten around pants legs. You're welcome.

Eta: Also keeps chiggers off
