They had already scored on a pick play down there in the same formation (I believe). Why did we not release the inside receiver to the outside DB?

Because they would have scored on a slant pattern inside. We hadn't stopped either one all night. Pick your poison IMO.

The inside DB (Tony Brown) covers the slant. The outside WR had no intention of catching the ball. That ball was going outside or Watson was running. I guess I am using my 20/20 hindsight vision. Switching receivers in that position is the only way to stop that play.

I can't remember which game it was but I have seen John Harbaugh in the same situation have the Ravens dbs tackle every single receiver as soon as the play starts. You take the penalty, but then enough clock has expired so they have to kick the field goal

I heard Spurrier on Mike and Mike this morning, and they were asking him how it could be defended. He said the switch off, then Golic pointed out that if they run a double slant you have two guys going inside and the outside corner is defending no one. Spurrier then says you have to have safety help in the case of double slant. It was pretty interesting because they were saying the pick play is pretty much undefendable

I think your only hope there is to disrupt the rub and or attack the edge and disrupt the QBs ability to see and have a clear pass out.

The problem there is of course he can just stop, cut back and easily dive into the endzone.
