Alabama track and field's Tarsis Orogot was named Men's National Athlete of the Week by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association after his electrifying 200-meter performance at the 2024 SEC Outdoor Championships.

The Soroti, Uganda, native excelled in the 200-meter dash in Gainesville, Fla., clocking a blistering personal-best time of 19.75 on his way to claiming the event title. His performance not only marked the third-fastest time in collegiate history but also established new records, including the Ugandan national record, East African record, school record, and meet record.

The Junior also helped the Crimson Tide to a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter, collecting a personal-best 10.06, and a sixth-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay.

This is the second consecutive year that Orogot has been named M-F Athletic National Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season.

Alabama’s Sydney Orefice Named Brad Davis SEC Community Service Leader of the Year Award

Orefice becomes the first women’s tennis player in program history to earn the honor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama women's tennis player Sydney Orefice was named the 2023-24 Brad Davis Southeastern Conference Female Community Service Leader of the Year, Commissioner Greg Sankey announced Tuesday.

Orefice and Texas A&M tennis player Kenner Taylor were chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from SEC universities. Each will receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship, provided by the SEC.

"Sydney and Kenner have made a commitment to making their world a better place with a dedication to service in their communities," said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. "Sydney and Kenner reflect a passion for a well-rounded college experience that is typical of student-athletes across the SEC and they represent all that can be achieved by the young people in our Conference. I congratulate them, their families and the universities they represent on this prestigious recognition."

A two-time SEC Community Service Team honoree, Orefice is the eighth Crimson Tide athlete to earn the overall honor. Furthermore, this is the first time Alabama has won the award in back-to-back years (Alabama swimmer Derek Mass won in 2023).

With Orefice's award this year, Alabama now leads the conference with eight overall honorees who have brought the men's and women's Community Service Leader of the Year award home to the Capstone, including: Tony Johnson (football) and Erin Tenbrunsel (volleyball) winning the inaugural honor in 1996, Nichole Lees (soccer, 1998), Andreé Pickens (gymnastics, 2002), Leigh Gilmore (track and field 2012), Lauren Beers (gymnastics, 2016) and Derek Mass (swimming & diving, 2023).

The SEC Community Service Post-Graduate Scholarship is named for former Associate Commissioner Brad Davis, who succumbed to cancer on March 2, 2006. He had been a member of the SEC staff since 1988, first serving as an assistant commissioner until 1994 when he was promoted to associate commissioner.

The No. 19 Alabama rowing program is set to travel to Sarasota, Florida, to compete in the Big 12 Conference Championship over the weekend at Nathan Benderson Park, with competition set to begin Sunday at 9 a.m. EST.

The Tide enters the weekend as one of three Big 12 conference schools represented in the latest rendition of the Pocock/CRCA Poll, joining top-ranked Texas and fellow conference-affiliate, No. 5 Tennessee.

Alabama's Third Varsity Four crew will take to the water at 9 a.m. EST in an exhibition race to kick off the conference championship. Official races will begin at 9:15 a.m. with the Third Varsity Eights.

The team with the highest combined score among the three automatic qualifier races - 1V8+, 2V8+ and 1V4+ - will receive the Conference's automatic qualifying spot at the 2024 NCAA Championship. Scoring for the Big 12 title will include all five official races.

The No. 19 Alabama rowing program medaled in four of five races at the Big 12 Championship, en route to a second-consecutive third-place team finish. Three members of the Crimson Tide's 1V8+ crew earned All-Big 12 honors: Lizzie Hall, Ingrid Lofgren, and Sydney Wenstrom.

Sunday's conference championship yielded four bronze medals for the Crimson Tide, highlighted by a nine-second difference between Alabama's First Varsity 8+ crew (6:28.320) and Central Florida's fourth-place boat. UA's Second Varsity 4+ crew also claimed bronze, finishing three seconds (7:23.087) faster than Central Florida's fourth-place boat.

The championship was capped with Alabama's Third Varsity 8+ crew crossing the finish line third (6:44.391), over two second ahead of Kansas State's fourth-place crew, and the Tide's First Varsity 4+ boat returning a bronze-medal winning performance (7:05.608), finishing one second ahead of fourth-place Central Florida.

Alabama now awaits the NCAA Division I Rowing Selection Show on Tuesday, May 21 at 4 p.m. CT, with qualifying teams racing in the NCAA Championships May 31-June 2 at East Fork/Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio.

HEAD COACH GLENN PUTYRAE
"It was a great morning of racing and while not every crew got their best result, we were proud of the way all our crews put their energy into their boat, kept fighting until the end, and demonstrated their strength as a team. Their base fitness was on display. We opened the gap on many crews and closed the gap on two very strong teams with come-from-behind performances in the 4's and 3V8."

This team has continued to gain speed throughout the spring and with each new combination, the rowers have embraced their new role in their boat knowing that the end goal was always to get things right on this day. Now we wait and see. The rowers controlled what they could control, and on Tuesday, we'll see if the selectors recognize their performance as a team."

No. 29 Filip Planinsek Becomes Second Alabama Player to Reach Men’s NCAA Singles Quarterfinals, Upsets No. 5 Micah Braswell in Round of 16

Planinsek is the first UA player since 2018 and just the second in program history to reach the quarterfinal round at the NCAA Singles Championships

STILLWATER, Okla. –– With mirroring 6-4, 6-4 set scores, No. 29-ranked Filip Planinsek became the second person in Alabama men's tennis history to reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championships as the junior upset No. 5 Micah Braswell (Texas) in the Round of 16 Wednesday.

The performance was Planinsek's second-best all-time collegiate win with only his victory over No. 1 Blake Shelton (Florida) in 2022 surpassing the feat. Planinsek was just the third player this season to defeat Braswell, who finished the tournament with a 39-3 season record. The Texas senior was on a 36-match winning streak heading into the quarterfinals, with his last lost occurring Oct. 6, 2023, in the Round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships.

Planinsek is just the second player in program history to reach the quarterfinals in the singles draw, joining Mazen Osama's top-eight finish in 2018. He also became the program's eighth player to earn All-America honors in singles, securing the Tide's 10th overall national singles accolade.

Distance duo Victor Kiprop (first) and Dennis Kipruto (10th) closed the opening day of the NCAA East Prelims by becoming the first two Alabama track and field student-athletes to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Reigning Southeastern Conference champion Kiprop ran away from the 10,000-meter field, setting a facility record (29:06.56) and becoming the Tide's first Nationals qualifier. The Iten, Kenya, native remained in striking distance until the final 10 laps where he took the lead and never looked back. Kipruto, meanwhile, hovered in the top-12 threshold until ultimately finishing 10th behind a 29:21.45 performance.

Earlier, in the track preliminary events, eight Crimson Tide student-athletes, spanned across four consecutive events, successfully advanced to the regional final. A trio of 400-meter runners became Alabama's first athletes to advance to Friday. Khaleb McRae (45.70) and Hasani Barr (46.43) went one-two, respectively, in the event's opening heat before Samuel Ogazi (46.24) tallied a second-place finish in the fourth heat to position the Tide with three Nationals-ticket-punching opportunities on Friday.

Oussama El Bouchayby's 1:46.94 performance was the fastest time across all six 800-meter heats before yet another trio of Tide runners earned an automatic-qualifying spot, this time in the 400-meter hurdles. Reigning national champion Chris Robinson (49.85) clocked the fastest time in the East region as reigning national runner-up Corde Long (50.67) posted an impressive heat-winning performance of his own, and Clayton Elder (51.20) rounded out the successful event with a third-place finish in the second heat.

Tarsis Orogot became the Crimson Tide's final athlete to advance out of the opening preliminary round, clocking 20.12 to earn the second-fastest time across all 200-meter heats.

Barr, El Bouchayby, Elder, Long, McRae, Ogazi, Orogot and Robinson will have to finish in the top 12 of their respective events on Friday to punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships, held in Eugene, Ore.

The second day of the NCAA East Prelims featured the beginning of the women's competition at Kentucky's Outdoor Track and Field Complex. Women's 10,000-meter distance runner Hilda Olemomoi punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships behind a 32:53.64, second-place finish. The feat marks the second-straight year that the Trans-Nzoia, Kenya, native has advanced to Nationals in the 10,000-meter run.

Minutes before the 10,000-meter runners were to toe the line for the final event of the second day of East Preliminary action, the track was cleared for four hours due to storms that rolled into the area. Without missing a beat, Alabama's Olemomoi returned to the track and calmly ran away from the field – through a steady downpour of rain – to secure a second-place finish, effectively qualifying her for the national meet. Teammate Brenda Tuwei hovered within the top-12 threshold for majority of the race before ultimately finishing 28th (33:51.73).

Earlier in the evening, Crimson Tide sprinter Na'Taja Ballard used a 23.26 performance in the 200-meter dash to propel her to Saturday where she will have the opportunity to earn a top-12 finish and advance herself to Eugene, Ore., for the National Championships (June 5-8).

Alabama also had five student-athletes compete across four field events: hammer thrower Chandler Hayden, javelin thrower Aspen Arrowsmith, long jumpers Miracle Ailes and Caelyn Harris and shot putter Amani Heaven. Despite sitting in seventh at the conclusion of her long jump flight, Ailes ultimately landed just outside of the top-12 threshold that would advance to the National Championships. Three top-25 finishes were earned by the UA group (Hayden – hammer – 19th; Harris – long jump – 22nd; Heaven – shot put – 24th) despite missing the NCAA Championships qualifying mark.

Filip Planinsek made history Thursday becoming the first Alabama men's tennis player in program history to reach the semifinals at the NCAA Singles Championships. No. 29 Planinsek used an exciting three-set victory to top No. 15-ranked Cooper Williams of Harvard, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, and advance into the top four.

Planinsek's advancement marks the first time UA has had a player reach the semifinals at the NCAA Singles Championships as the Crimson Tide junior improves to 25-13 on the year. The All-American made history prior to Thursday's match, joining Mazen Osama as the only two players in program history to reach both the Round of 16 and the quarterfinals in the singles tournament.

The victory was the third consecutive win over a top-20 ranked singles player as Planinsek downed No. 17 Cannon Kingsley (Ohio State) in the Round of 32 and No. 5 Micah Braswell (Texas) in the Round of 16 prior to his quarterfinal victory against No. 15 Williams.
