People complain about the poor quality of play under Grant but, while I'm no expert, I watch enough college basketball to see that the overall level of play isn't all that astounding anywhere.

There are talented players but just the quality of running good offensive sets, inbounding plays etc seems a lot more like recreation league stuff than it was in the past.

Not an argument for retaining Grant but, to me, the focus should be on his main issue: uncanny shortcomings in recruiting (and perhaps development of) power forwards.

I cringe at some of the offensive teamwork, inbounds plays a LOT more with most other teams I watch than Grant's and the defense seems pretty well-taught comparatively speaking.

However, the massive problem has and continues to be a decent presence in the paint: if you add even a Erwin Dudley to any of his NIT teams (including this year's) and the "coaching" looks a whole lot better, not to mention getting NCAA instead of NIT bids.

It's just rediculous that Alabama can't make the field of 64 at least occasionally. He's had more than enough time to get this ship headed in the right direction and it remains a slowly sinking rust covered derelict.

I agree wm - the biggest issues with Grant are as follows

(1) Big man recruiting and development - he has signed "good recruits" that fell into his lap, but they have either left or gotten zero better over their careers. His projects got no better.

(2) Energy of the program. We've all talked about it, we all know what it means, etc. This doesn't work if you suck but you at least have to try.

There are certain coaches that just develop players. We need to find one of those guys. Lon Kruger, Tony Bennett, Greg Marshall, Fred Hoiberg, etc. Those guys don't recruit elite prospects, but they always have 2-3 solid upperclassmen every single season, and normally 1 of them is a big guy. I don't think we can get any of THOSE guys, but we need to find someone LIKE those guys.
