Lot of people flying out of Atlanta and Birmingham are going to have their flights screwed up, and anybody expecting to drive down through Atlanta/Central Georgia/Carolinas on Saturday is out of luck.

We are driving down day of the game from Atlanta, but with temperatures not really getting out of the mid 30's from Saturday to Monday morning, along with our city history in these situations, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't pretty damned nervous about the whole thing.

Yea, our only option with kids and babysitters and the long setup is Monday morning. I assume that the interstates will be ok by Monday, but assuming about the governmental response to snowstorms in the South is bound to make an arse of u and me.

Folks flying though, that'll be a shiteshow. Luckily its a few days out so they'll probably make it ok, but it won't be fun.

Snow storm? In Atlanta?

Brother I've gotten 14 inches of snow in the last 18 hours.

And it's going to be -10 degrees tonight.

As you probably know, Atlanta and Birmingham ain't exactly Boise and Laramie in the handling of snow on the roads department.

God I hope not. I can't speak for Laramie, but the Boise roads are horrendous right now.

Don't think it'll be as bad as you're claiming it.

Do you remember 2014? 2-4 inches of snow, when preceded by ice and followed by sub-freezing temperatures have wrecked Atlanta and Birmingham many times before.

And flights should be find unless there is icing issues.

Hartsfield-Jackson is already preparing for the storm and warning people to be ready for delays.

Again - it shouldn't be a huge issue, but because of where we are there is certainly the possibility that it will be a giant nuisance.

From the AJC about an hour ago

quote:

Both Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines are warning that flights to Atlanta and other cities in the Southeast may be impacted by the weather.

Atlanta-based Delta is waiving certain change fees for those with flights booked Jan. 6-7 to, from or through Atlanta, Asheville; Birmingham; Charlotte; Chattanooga; Columbia; Fayetteville; Greensboro; Greenville/Spartanburg; Huntsville; Jacksonville; Knoxville; Nashville; New Bern, N.C.; Newport News; Norfolk; Raleigh-Durham; Tri-Cities, Tenn.; and Wilmington, N.C.

Dallas-based Southwest warned that its flights Jan. 6-7 to or from Atlanta, Birmingham, Charlotte, Greenville/Spartanburg, Nashville, Norfolk and Raleigh/Durham may be delayed, diverted or canceled. Passengers with flights booked for those dates can rebook or travel standby without paying any additional charge, according to Southwest.

You will be absolutely fine by that time. Folks further east may have more trouble because they'll be cooler and the system will arrive later in the weekend but Central Alabama is projected to get into the upper 30s Saturday afternoon and the middle 40s on Sunday. Any road troubles for us will be long gone.

If the forecast holds, overnight Friday and early Saturday is when we'll have our adventures.

Yea - as long as you avoid the Atlanta route. Driving through Atlanta should be avoided Saturday if at all possible.

Clemson folks in the Upstate and North Carolina are not going to have a fun time. Too bad

The route through Montgomery/Dothan/Tallahassee, while annoying, should be totally free of any threat of winter weather or the headaches that come along with it.

The difference in tomorrow/Saturday and 2014 is that they missed the forecast by 80 miles, so all the sand trucks went south to Montgomery and couldn't get back to Birmingham when they realized the storm hit further north than expected. Bham didn't have any roads treated.

And in 2014, the temperatures were in the 20s, making the snow and rain quickly freeze the roads. That wont be the case this weekend. There may be a couple of inches of snow, but the temperature will be over freezing much of Friday and the blacktop will melt most of what hits.

I could be 100% wrong and I'll delete this as soon as my power comes back on.

For all that is good and holy in the world, don't take this route.

My wife's best friend from high school lives in Tampa. We make the trek at least twice a year. If you're going there from central Alabama, go the Colombus, Albany, Valdosta, track.

Exactly the same mileage and time with none of the Troy, Dothan, and Tallahassee headaches.

The highs Saturday and Sunday will be between 33-36 and the lows will be 15-20.

At least in Atlanta.
