Auburn looks pretty good in their spring game particularly Stidham. They play 1s vs 2s though.

What I want to know is what did the offense look like in terms of alignment and structure?

I haven't been following terribly closely so far. Anyone want to take a shot at a depth chart for me? I know it's a little difficult with Bo and SDH and some other main guys not healthy, but I'll take whatever. Most interested in defense, because I feel like the offense is pretty straightforward.

The defense will be nasty again.
Buggs, Payne and Hand will destroy OL. The scondary might be the best that Saban has had.
Bama will have two of the best ILB in the country as usual. OLB has the talent, just not the experience.

The offense could be Saban's best, if the passing game develops. Bama hasn't been this deep at RB since 2010. Lot of depth at TE. Lot of talent at receiver, going to have to use some of those stud freshman.

If the passing game develops and no major injuries, this team should go 15-0 and add another national championship.

I hope he has and hope he does well, Lord knows that hype train has to be running low on coal by now.

Someone did a good sell job keeping Foster around...

I'm really excited to see the spring game this year, so much talent that has been waiting for a chance, plus lots of guys returning from last year who are going to be super hungry to win a title after missing out by 1 second, plus a returning QB for the first time in 3 years

Quarterback play a bright spot during Alabama's first spring scrimmage | AL.com
quote:

Not long after Alabama's scrimmage started on Saturday, Jalen Hurts already had two touchdown passes -- one to Calvin Ridley and a long one to Robert Foster on the next drive.

The Crimson Tide's rising sophomore quarterback added two more touchdown passes later on, finishing Alabama's first spring scrimmage with the four touchdowns and no interceptions while completing more than 50 percent of his passes, according to coach Nick Saban.

It was a positive, productive first scrimmage for the reigning SEC Offensive Player of the Year in his first scrimmage under new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

"I thought he did a really good job," Saban said. "I don't think he threw any interceptions today, so that was good. He has a good understanding of what we're doing and did a much better job in the pocket and did a really good job with play action-passes."

As a whole, the passing game was a bright spot Saturday.

There were a lot of big plays made in the passing game, Saban said.

Hurts did well, starting with those early touchdown passes to Ridley and Foster. The feedback was also solid for freshmen quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones.

All three quarterbacks did a "fairly good job," Saban said, though stats weren't provided for Tagovailoa or Jones.

"I thought the transition on offense was pretty smooth on offense with the things we were doing, the carryover of things we've done from the past as well as the new things that we did," Saban said. "I thought we were much more effective passing the football today. A lot of big plays. A lot of explosive plays throwing the ball, especially play-action passes."

Alabama DB: We got 'tore up' by QBs in scrimmage | AL.com
quote:

It's one thing for Nick Saban to laud the Alabama passing game from Saturday's scrimmage.

Safety Hootie Jones took it a step further. Giving perhaps the most brutally honest assessment you'll hear from a defensive back, the senior went right in.

"I mean, honestly," he said, "the defense really got tore up by the quarterbacks."

Returning starter Jalen Hurts threw for four touchdowns while finding open spaces in the middle of the defense. Saban said there wasn't "enough respect" from the defense for the middle of the field in the rehearsal.

Jones didn't question that appraisal.

"We didn't think they was going to probably pass it that much, but when we did think they were going to pass it, we (thought) it was gonna be short passes," Jones said. "And that was killing the defense. Honestly, I can't sugar coat it."

All three quarterbacks -- not just Hurts -- did damage Saturday. Several players mentioned freshmen Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones had strong afternoons too.

The Alabama secondary returns all but one starter from the group that finished the 2016 season. A week ago, safety Ronnie Harrison said the defensive backs "will probably be the strength of the defense."

The defense was just off in the scrimmage.

"We was anticipating a lot of stuff," Jones said. "We was anticipating run, reading run too much, and then just simple things that we could control. It wasn't nothing that the coaches had."

Receiver Cam Sims just smiled when Jones' "tore up" comments were mentioned to him Monday.

"I wouldn't say all that," Sims said with a grin. "We just had a good day and we're just pretty much just focused on this week and improving."

Ultimately, effort has to be there, Jones said.

"We just have to play faster, for real," Jones said. "We were playing very lazy out there and not respecting our keys that we've been told to respect at all times, we just weren't doing it.

Depth at RB shows during Alabama's first scrimmage | AL.com
quote:

Alabama has an embarrassment of riches at running back. That became apparent Saturday during the team's first scrimmage of the spring.

One former five-star recruit didn't participate. Another didn't make it through unscathed. And two other talented ball carriers remained rooted to the sideline with injuries.

Cause for concern? Not really. Najee Harris and Brian Robinson were available. The two early enrollees were heavily involved in the souped-up practice, according to head coach Nick Saban.

"Najee played a lot," Saban said. "Brian Robinson played a lot, which is good for them."

Although Saban fretted about the offensive line not creating "enough movement up front," he seemed pleased with the two newcomers running behind the Tide's row of blockers.

Harris, the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2017 class, has created some buzz since setting foot on campus. Robinson, a four-star player from Tuscaloosa, has attracted local interest.

Together, they are the newest members of a crowded backfield that includes Bo Scarbrough, Damien Harris, Josh Jacobs and B.J. Emmons.

Scarbrough, Jacobs and Emmons were held out Saturday. Scarbrough (leg) and Emmons (foot) continue to recover from injuries suffered last season while Jacobs was sidelined with a thigh bruise. The elder Harris, who led Alabama in rushing with 1,037 yards last season, aggravated a foot sprain he suffered March 25.

Saban said before he was hurt Harris did "a good job in the scrimmage."

"I don't know what the prognosis will be," Saban added. "I don't think it's anything real serious but it may keep him out a few days."

That shouldn't be a problem. Alabama has enough in its reserves to keep the machine rolling along this spring.

Trevon Diggs tested during Alabama's scrimmage, praised afterward | AL.com
quote:

Four of the five members of the first-team secondary during Alabama's scrimmage on Saturday were returning starters. The other was Trevon Diggs, the latest test for the versatile sophomore as Crimson Tide coaches try to decide whether to leave him on defense or move him back to wide receiver.

The Tide had Minkah Fitzpatrick, who started spring practice at cornerback, back at safety and Diggs as the first-team cornerback opposite Anthony Averett.

The feedback was positive after the scrimmage as the 6-foot-2, 195-pound Diggs continues to look more and more like a serious contender to fill Marlon Humphrey's vacated starting cornerback job.

"We're pleased with the progress that he's made," coach Nick Saban said.

Diggs worked at both safety and wide receiver last summer before focusing mostly on wide receiver last season, which he finished with 11 catches for 88 yards and a touchdown.

While people inside the Alabama program believe Diggs has the talent to be a very good wide receiver, the decision was made to test him at cornerback this spring.

The experiment is going well, though Saban said Saturday that he hasn't decided whether he's going to leave Diggs at cornerback or move him back to receiver.

"He's much more natural playing at corner than when we tried to play him at safety," Saban said. "That's where he played in high school. (He's) long. He has good toughness. He's a good tackler. Plays the ball well in the deep part of the field and he's done a good job of playing man-to-man. I don't know what we're going to do with him the rest of the spring. We'll probably decide something after the end of this when we look at the scrimmage."
