So 4th & 11 wasn't Smart's stupid fault. It was Justin Fields all the time....

Saw below quote in regards to fake punt play on dawg nation's board. Take it for what it is worth quote: Perhaps it might. I know someone with firsthand knowledge of what happened on that fake punt. It was Justin Fields' call whether to run that fake punt based on Alabama's pre-snap alignment. He called it on, checked with the sideline to get the go-ahead, and the UGA staff called it off. He gives the thumbs-up as if to say "Okay, no problem," turns, and runs the fake punt anyway. Maybe he wanted his moment in the spotlight, maybe he thought it was there after all, who knows. Later, after the game, Kirby is blessing him out in the locker room about it, and Fields, fed up, yells "F it, I'm transferring." Smart is not a dude that's gonna throw his bus, so of course you won't hear anything about that from him. But all this heat he's catching about the fake punt and terrible call is misplaced. So the only way I can see it helping us is if Fields transfers.

None of this accounts for the fact that they even considered running a fake punt in that situation with their backup QB on the field with the punt team for the first time all season. This smells like bullshite.

As interesting as this sounds I don't buy it. This is too convenient of a way for the UGA fanbase to feel better about losing the guy. Textbook sour grapes.

I figured it all probably had something to do with 4th and 11.

yeah. This is UGA fans trying to rationalize why it's actually a good thing thing that Fields is transferring and, by the way, Kirby Smart isn't actually as stupid as he looked like when everybody thought he called the play.

Who knows but it sounds logical to me....that false punt call was so bizarre, particularly given the way Fields bailed. It looked like a busted play call. I mean Kirby is not that dumb or reckless. He is a defensive minded coach and his D was playing well all game. You would think he would try to make Hurts drive it 80 yards or whatever and beat you with his arm.

Fields didn't appear to have looked over in this video. In any event, and as previously noted, it was stupid anyway to have a fake punt call with Fields as an up back.

Not buying that.
Sounds like what some scorned UGA fan would come up with.

Kirby made the call. He said his players didn't run it fast enough.

It's on kirby

Smart could've called a timeout. It's a laughable story that I don't believe for a second. Kirby felt the python's grip tightening around his throat and called in a desperation prayer. Little Pat knew how that game was ending as soon as Waddle housed that crossing route

When Kirby saw our defense on the field, and not the kick team, he should have just called time out. He should have been standing beside the ref, and we he saw Ala had the player covered, he should have been screaming in the refs ear. No one to blame, but himself.

Even if that's true it's the coaching staff's fault for giving him that option.

to be very clear, that wasn't my comment. That was the uga fan's comment. I guess I should have used quotation marks, but it was all in the link.

Why the fake punt was actually a really good call:

Kirby said post-game, when asked about the fake punt, that they had installed a punt fake specifically designed for Bama's Punt Safe with regular personnel. He said, "Obviously we know what their Punt Safe is", and had designed a play to take advantage of Bama's assignments on Punt Safe with Regular.

Go back and watch the play again. GA wants to throw it to who is the equivalent of the offensive Right Tackle, but he's got a single digit jersey number. Also, the ball is not being snapped by the lineman in the middle of the formation. It's something akin to a tackle eligible play out of punt fake. Our ILB's in Punt Safe do not go with that guy in man coverage, but Saban and Co. were screaming from the sidelines to cover that guy because he's eligible, and we got it covered. This is corroborated by Saban post-game. You can see Mack Wilson telling Moses to cover the "Right Tackle", when just before Moses was pointing to his man deep in the backfield.

There is no problem for GA that we are running Punt Safe with regular personnel. This fake is designed solely for that package. However, as Kirby directly said, they took too long to get it snapped - for whatever reason. It didn't feel that way to the TV viewer b/c we were busy watching the slo-mo replay of the previous play, and weren't watching them line up.

Honestly, it was a really good call, and if GA snaps it 2 seconds earlier , they have a LB catching the ball in the flat with no one within 15 yards of him. Fields gave a quick speed option left look to get the LBs moving the wrong way, and stands up to pop it to the LB, but he's covered. Play blown up.

If GA snaps it 2 seconds earlier, they get a first down at minimum. And then they almost certainly take the lead with very little time left for us, as they would immediately be in field goal range.

People will remember that call as a horrible one, but it wasn't. It was just going all in for the win at that moment. Ballsy call. But not a bad call. The play was executed 2 seconds too late. Maybe 1.

See concrete proof above that this is not true at all.
