This is a long article, but one I had never seen. It really covers a lot of topics, including quotes from Coach.

No offense but that article sucked...written by some SI douche who trotted out every dumb Southern cliché in the book. I realize that was written in 1981 but it was really unbearable.

I had a difficult time keeping up with time frames. Maybe, I was tired when I read it, but it seemed all over the place.

No flame for posting it - I don't think I ever saw that one before either...and have read everything related to Bryant.

My comment was just the unbearable, snarky style of that author which is typical of SI. Every stupid Southern cliché was used because the a-hole was too lazy....but that's SI for you. I will re-read it when I am in a better frame of mind but couldn't even get through it......typical SI, New York centric perspective which is tired old bullshite but I also recognize that is a 35 year old article.

I agree 100%. I didn't take it as a flame. I wasn't crazy about the article either, I just posted it because I had never seen it. You're a better person than me if you can reread it

That's the one where Deford reported that Bryant had to pee a lot. Even Dean Smith wouldn't talk to him after that.

I stopped at the point when he says the campus has nothing beautiful or graceful.

Congratulations, my friends! You just found and read vintage SI tripe that they used to write ALL the time in my youth. Although that was the preeminent sports magazine in the country growing up, I never gave them a dime of my hard earned southern money because dammit, they couldn't help themselves. Every time they felt the need to write about Alabama because they just couldn't ignore the elephant in the room any longer (pun intended), they trotted out all of the old Yankee cliches' about the South and how backwards and ignorant we were. They vilified us at every turn and every compliment was a back handed one. I believe SI was based in New York and they had no trouble maintaining that persona for my entire childhood up until about the turn of the century. They've softened some, now, but not completely. Their shtick got old, our old southern gentlemen coaches like Bryant, Vaught, Neyland, etc have all succumbed to time, so they've changed their tune some. I'll never forgive nor forget them. They, among other northern media, would sing the praises of heathens like Parsegian, Hayes, Schembeckler, and McKay and their football teams and being as pure and clean as the driven snow while we southern people just rooted in the mud and filth and cheated and lied and did everything but eat babies. My offense runs deeps as I was forced to endure this insult and drivel from the time of my earliest memories until I was a young adult freshly graduated from college. So no, I won't forget. That article is vintage SI in it's treatment of the South and of Coach Bryant. Every praise is qualified with an insult, either stated or implied. frick them and frick their attitude.

Don't forget Joe Paterno. He was the sports media's embodiment of winning the right way - "Success with Honor."

Also, anybody else notice that the author seemed disappointed he couldn't see the male genitalia? Lol

The whole child molesting stuff gets all the attention, and rightfully so, but when Penn State was an Independent, it was a joke playing at their stadium. The refs were bought and paid for and everyone knew it.

I honestly thought, I was just tired and being a peckerhead. I'm glad it pissed other folks off too.

I was pissed about that '83 Bama Penn State game, and it took place before I was conceived.

LINK

And one year earlier, they'd been handed victory against Nebraska when Penn State was awarded a catch like 5 yards out of bounds.

I'm surprised that nobody addressed the fact that the freshly dead, Frank Deford wrote the article. Frank is widely considered one of the top-5 sportswriters ever, and yes, he was blatantly anti-southern and generally considered to be an arrogant prick. A good indicator is that he was one of Bryant Gumbel's main mentors.
